It was said the Sefi kept animal slaves to bed when their hands tired them,
that they hung their young by the toes as punishment for the most benign
transgressions, that they crooned to low beasts and spat at the benevolent
heavens. The Sefi were savages; those who cavorted with them were lower
than beasts, craven and wretched in their immorality.
The words of his people echoed in Vadi’s mind as he was stitched into
his Sefi wedding clothes by a Sefi tailor. His new mother had chosen to
dress him in silk robes of seafoam and pearl. In the dressing room mirror,
they floated around his body like a cloak of mist, alien in their nearweightless grace and seamless make.
As the Sefi tailor finished sewing him in at the back, Vadi was able to
grasp the full effect of the garment for the first time. Though this was no
dream wedding, it could not be denied that this was a dream wedding
garment.
In the prismatic light of the Sefi high temple, it was possible to glimpse
every subtle detail of his wedding robes, from the jaybirds embroidered
along each layered hem to the Yana-ir style plunging neckline, which
displayed his heredity marks proudly.
Vadi traced the swooping characters flowing down the midline of his
chest, each one an ancestor, each one beloved. His eyes misted, but he was
quick to blink any emotion away. He may not be with family today, but
family was still with him.
The garment glowed, ethereal and delicate, further complimented by the
peach diamonds braided into his long dark hair, the silver rings and fine
filagree ear cuffs which would, presumably, pair nicely with his consort’s
circlet. A generous length of blackwater pearls looped thrice around his
neck, a homage to the shores of his home island, Ishvana.
He brushed the pearls at his throat with shaking fingers. Will I ever see
those shores again? Will I ever even step foot on Yanapoor?
“Sire?” His new Sefi attendant called from the doorway, bowed over
fists, eyes on the floor. The alien’s strange purple skin was patched mauve
and lilac. Vadi had yet to figure out whether it was natural pigmentation or
some sort of strange alien rash. “His Radiance is ready for you.”
The tailor stepped away, surveying Vadi with a glow of contentment
about her.
Her pride was deserved.
Vadi beheld his trifold reflection, struck by the poised and steady
countenance of the man in the mirror, the statuesque strength and elegance
of his bearing. You would never know that such a man was silently
screaming.
“Do I look handsome, Na’rel?” Vadi asked.
Na’rel kept his eyes on the floor. The tops of his ears and the apples of
his cheeks turned dark as plums.
“It is not my place to say, Sire.”
“I’ve always been friendly with my staff. I was told that wouldn’t
change when I came to this planet. Was I misled?”
