PRINCESS GALDINIA WASN’T READY TO BE QUEEN.
For ninety-three days, she journeyed to the Crystal Temple to pray for
her father, to ask the Gods to bring him back to good health. She needed
him to recover because she couldn’t fathom wearing her mother’s crown
yet.
Day after day, Galdinia knelt at the altar, seeking healing for her father’s
illness. But in those three months, his condition had only worsened. His
sudden decline came after he was caught in a vicious late summer storm on
his way back from a tour of the villages in the Midlands Province. She
thought the king would be back hunting at sunrise and addressing his court
within the week, but weeks turned into months, and he still hadn’t left his
bed.
Although it broke her heart to watch her only living parent struggle to
breathe, struggle to live, all Galdinia could focus on was what would
happen if he didn’t make it. While no one formally said anything to her,
whenever she’d visit her father’s bedside, members of the Crysterra
Syndicate would give her sideways glances as she cried, already
questioning how fit the young nineteen-year-old princess was to sit on the
throne. No one even dared mention the gift that she lacked.
Galdinia watched as her father went from sneezing uncontrollably to
hardly being able to inhale a full breath. Her father—the King of Crysterra,
the ruler they needed—was dying, and there wasn’t anything she could do
about it.
The Gods, on the other hand, could.
Each morning, Galdinia travelled to the Isle of Crystal, where she was
greeted by the high priestess, Saena, at the doors of the Crystal Temple.
Saena would often use her gift to create small balls of Peacelight to
surround Galdinia as she knelt at the altar. The priestesses were all Light
Lenders, a gift bestowed on them by the Gods when they made their
sacrament, regardless of their previous position within society. They could
all draw on and manipulate various sources of light, be it candlelight, a
raging fire, or that of the sun’s rays. The high priestess, however, could
conjure light from her own hands. Aside from those with royal blood, her
gift was the most powerful. She used it most mornings to try to calm the
princess’ nerves with its warming glow.
Aside from her father’s bedside,
the temple was one of the few places that Galdinia allowed herself to shed a
tear as she came to terms with her father’s inevitable demise and so she
became quite fond of the Peacelight that encircled her daily.
Once settled at the altar, Galdinia began her prayers to the three Gods.
She asked the God of Wisdom for knowledge in understanding how she
might support her father in this time, seeking new herbal recipes that could
bring about an improvement in his health and stamina. Next, she prayed to
the God of Love, asking for his eternal affection to be shown through the
healing of her father.
Finally, she turned to the God of Guidance, where she
would ask, upon her arrival back to the city, to be escorted to the castle in
the hopes that she would meet someone who may be able to cure her
father’s ailments and pain.
