The hedgehogs had lived on the land surrounding Hilltop Place since
before the city was a smudge on the horizon, and the only contact
hedgehogs had with humans was when they came to hunt them for their
meat. Hunting forays aside, the land was a hedgehog paradise, with leafshedding trees and soil rich with worms, beetles, and juicy slugs.
Nowadays, although humans bought their meat from the
supermarket and had given up their hedgehog-hunting ways, life still
wasn’t easy for the snuffling, shuffling creatures. Apart from a few
pockets of woodland, the area had been developed, and the hedgehogs
were forced to search for food in gardens, where they often encountered
fences. Lots of fences.
What the hedgehogs needed was a more natural environment,
especially with autumn on the horizon—a time of gathering in and
feeding up as they prepared to hibernate over winter.
The hedgehogs didn’t know it, as they squeezed under gates and
negotiated concrete planters, but a champion was about to emerge. A
champion whose efforts would unwittingly change the lives of all the
residents of Hilltop Place, and not just the prickly ones.
It wasn’t only the hedgehogs in Hilltop Place who were busily
gathering in and storing up as summer galloped to its close. The humans
were focused on satisfying their deepest cravings too. Some craved a
new car or a piece of expensive jewellery. One even longed for a reason
to carry on. But Jess Crawford, who lived at Number Two, longed to
welcome a second child into her family.
As any hedgehog will tell you, things are never straightforward.
Just as you discover a juicy cache of earthworms and it seems as if your
most deep-seated desires are going to be satisfied, some human will
open their back door to let the dog out, or another hedgehog will come
barging along and shove you right out of the way to gobble up the
worms themselves.
If the hedgehogs needed to make sure they ate enough food to get
them through the long months of hibernation, Jess Crawford needed to
find the strength to start a new, positive chapter of her life. For even with
the sense of purpose and fulfillment she got from caring for Stella, her
daughter, Jess still felt, metaphorically speaking, as if each of the two
miscarriages she’d experienced since Stella’s birth had carved away a
little more of her flesh, leaving her angled and hollowed out. As if the
space the babies had taken up inside her might never be filled again.
But all that was about to change. For tomorrow, the son she had
longed for, for so long, would arrive. And this evening, as hedgehogs
roamed unseen outside in the warmth of the August night, Jess put on a
sexy, silky nightdress instead of the comfortable cotton one she
favoured, determined to make love to her husband, Michael, by way of
celebration.
They hadn’t done anything remotely sexual for some months. The
stress of the adoption process, coming hard on the heels of sex dictated
by ovulation kits, had led to a sexual desert. And with one-year-old Toby
