“FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING, please tell me there are sourdough
croissants left!”
Adam burst into Dot’s Place and flung his arms out dramatically,
looking around the bookstore and cafe.
Sixty-four-year-old Dorothy Hensley, the owner and Adam’s mother
looked up from where she was researching new biographies.
“Feeling dramatic today, are we?”
Janie, one of Dorothy’s two young employees ambled by Adam looking
at him like he was another species.
“How do you have so much pep in the afternoon?” She had an armload
of books and so gestured with her chin toward the pastry counter. “Tyler’s
got like two more…”
“Fabulous.” Adam was already walking toward the far end of the
counter.
Janie and Dorothy rolled their eyes at each other before the younger
woman disappeared into the back with the books and a feather duster.
Buttons, one of the two familiar cats that helped Dorothy’s family,
leaped up onto the counter and quietly rubbed his head under Dorothy’s
hand.
“Do you need attention, too?” Dorothy smiled at him.
“Always,” Buttons muttered quietly, but then rolled his eyes toward
Adam. “He’s got something on his mind, though. I can tell.”
“Thanks.” Dorothy put down her work and stood, watching Adam thank
Tyler and make his way back toward her. “That will be $3.50.”
“What? I’m your son!”
“Then four even.”
“Buttons, can you do something about her, please?”
Buttons smirked and leaped off the counter, sauntering into the back
room.
“You’re no help!” Adam called after his retreating tail.
“I hear you have something to tell me.”
Dorothy felt tired saying the words. For the last few months their quiet
existence in the small town of Oakwood had been rocked by multiple
murders all seeming to circle an underground antique-smuggling ring.
Between that and the Hensleys suddenly realizing their unique magical
powers, Dorothy felt someone was constantly “telling her something” and
the phrase was beginning to fill her with dread.
“Please tell me this ‘something’ is that you’ve won the lottery and are
going to buy your mother a castle in Scotland.”
Adam shook his head sadly. “Sorry, Mom. Not today.” He took a bite of
the croissant, closing his eyes in ecstasy.
Dorothy noticed the flakes falling all over her counter. She sighed and
grabbed a napkin from under the counter and placed it strategically in the
fall area of Adam’s next bite.
Adam chewed slowly and exhaled happily through his nose. “Don’t
worry,” he said, his words muffled by the pastry. “It’s not the usual bad
news. Zoe’s okay. Frank’s okay.”
Zoe was Adam’s teenage daughter and she had the same habit as
Dorothy of using her curiosity to get her into awkward situations. Like
finding a body in the wilderness, as Zoe had done not too long ago.
“Well that’s a relief anyway.”
Adam looked thoughtful. “Except maybe with Frank. I said he’s okay
but honestly he’s been a big grouch lately.”
Dorothy raised an eyebrow. Frank, her boyfriend and business partner,
was a wonderful, understanding and kind man. His former career as a
newspaper editor caused the owners of the local paper to beg him to fill in
when the previous editor had been murdered.
The long hours must be taking a toll, Dorothy thought. “So, what’s the
news?”
