CASSIUS
My… what?”
I glare at my brother in utter incomprehension. My brain
struggles to connect the pieces. I know the grey mush between my
ears doesn’t work right anymore, but hallucinating my brother and some dude
he says is my dad? That’s messed-up even for me.
Maybe I’m even sicker in the head than I realize.
I do the only thing I can think of to test if I’ve gone cuckoo.
I punch my brother in the face.
“Ow. Fuck!”

Gaius staggers back, cupping his hands over his nose. Blood spurts
between his fingers.
I shake my fist and stare at my knuckles. They sting from connecting with
something solid – my brother’s nose.
It’s him. It’s really Gaius.

My brother is back. Everything will be okay now.
Gaius is still trying to staunch the bleeding when I throw my arms around
him. “Ow, watch it—”
“I missed you so much.” I bury my head into his shoulder, the way I used
to do when I was a tiny kid, before Cali told us both that hugging showed
weakness. I don’t care about looking weak now – my mother can hardly
move, so she can’t exactly tell me off, and I haven’t touched or spoken to or
even seen my brother since the night he took the rap for my crime.
“When you miss someone, you don’t punch them in the face,” Gaius
grumbles, but he throws his arms around me in return.

My big brother has come back, and he smells the same and his arms feel
so strong as they fold around me, and he’ll make everything right again, just
like he always does. Gaius will make my mother love me again. He’ll fix the
Triumvirate and prevent a war. He’ll take over running things while Cali
recovers because I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.

He’s here. He’s here. The joy bubbles inside me. I laugh and laugh and
laugh as I hold him close, so close he’ll never be able to leave me again.
I wish Fergie were back from training. I can’t wait for her to meet Gaius.
She’s going to adore him.
“Little bro,” Gaius chokes out. He beats his fists against my back. “I…
can’t… breathe…”

“Right.” I drop him from my embrace. He falls into a pile on the floor and
picks himself up, frowning as he rubs at the bloodstain from his nose on the
collar of his immaculate suit.
“You haven’t changed a bit,” he says with a smirk. “Well, apart from the
fact you’re now bubblegum blue.”
A memory flashes in my mind.

At least, I think it’s a memory. The image is sharp in my mind, but it’s
not something I remember. Gaius is about fourteen, and he’s on his way to
high school in his Stonehurst uniform, when I run up to him with one of my
toy swords, begging for him to play with me.
‘Stay away from me, Cas,” he said as he turned to glare at me, and the
look in his eyes…

Maybe my brain damage has knocked something loose, because in this
memory, Gaius does not look like my brother.
He looks like he hates me.
Like he’s imagining wrapping his fingers around my neck and squeezing
tight.
