Phoenix
I’d never seen my Pops this anxious.
Pissed off. Ready to kill anyone in his way. Yes. But seeing him anxious
—nope, never. It was a little discerning.
Walking over to stand beside him, I clapped him on the shoulder. “She’s
going to be okay. You know that right?”

“Why isn’t she back in the room yet? This is infuriating.”
Chuckling, I shook my head. “They take the babies to be given a full
check-up. They’ll do bloodwork, double check weight and measurements.
They’ll even get her prints and give her a little sponge bath. You’ve been
through this before, ya know?”

“Yes, wise ass, I know. This time is no better.”
“I had the same reaction when my sweet little munchkin came into the
world. That was the toughest couple of hours.”
“Then you let that fucking bitch take her from you—us.”
“I didn’t let her take her. The judge is the one who gave her full custody
because ‘you’re not home enough to have a stable environment for a
growing child.’” I took a minute to get my sudden wash of emotions under
control. “I’d have been a bad dad in the beginning anyway. I was a kid
myself.”

“You were twenty-four. You were working full-time for Uncle Sam,
wearing a uniform, putting your life on the line, and going to school.”
“All that aside, what in the hell did I know about raising a little girl? For
that matter, I still don’t have a fucking clue, man.”
“Yeah, well, your mom and I were only nineteen when you came along.
We did what we needed to do, and you grew up just fine. A pain in my ass
at times but all right.”

“You two fought like cats and dogs anytime you came around. Which,
let’s face it, was the highlight of my week sometimes. But you, too, had a
job to do. You earned every stripe and ribbon that adorned your uniform.
Don’t forget that. It did suck that I couldn’t tell people you were an
assassin.”

“I wasn’t—okay, yeah, that wasn’t kid-appropriate. Special Forces was
an intense time in my life. The PTSD alone has me still wondering if being
around—” he nods at Casey where she lay in the hospital bed—“is a good
idea. She and the girls depend on me to be present.”
“Then fucking be present. You’re a grown ass man now. Be different.

Do different.” I shrugged.
“I hope to be a better dad for the girls. I don’t want to fail them too.”
“You failed no one, old man. I am who I am because of you.” I gave his
shoulders a hard squeeze. “You’re already the best dad to your kids. Penny
loves you, something fierce.” He raised a brow. “I mean, I love you and all,
but you’re a dick sometimes.”

His booming laughter filled the room. Casey stirred in the bed, where
she had been sleeping after having the youngest of the Cavanagh clan. She
deserved the sleep after nineteen hours in labor.
“Shit. Sorry, sweetheart.” Pops walked to the bed and leaned in to kiss
her lips.
