KELSEY
9 Years Later
A cheerful tune rang out overhead as my fingers miserably clacked away
at my keyboard, the singer warbling on about everlasting love.
Yeah, right. I looked around the harshly lit fluorescent office only to have
my eyes further accosted by vibrant floral arrangements, heart-shaped
chocolate boxes, and even a giant teddy bear, all proudly displayed on my
coworkers’ desks.
Only mine was bare of Valentine’s Day adornment, signifying that I was
not anyone’s everlasting love—or even lukewarm temporary desire.
Even Sarah, who had spent all last week grumbling about how the
Hallmark holiday was offensive to our beings, was now giggling over a
stuffed frog holding a lace heart stitched with You make my heart leap.
How the mighty had fallen.
“So, Kelsey, how’s Bryce?” My direct supervisor and Fulton Advertising’s
own marketing genius, Victoria Fairchild, eyed my empty desk over her huge
white rose bouquet while she plucked a browning petal or two from it.
“We broke up,” I said, trying to sound detached.
We broke up . . . I need to buy coffee filters . . . I have leftovers from last
week rotting in my fridge . . .
All just mundane facts of life. Nothing to get emotional about.
Life will never be the same . . .
Darn. That method failed miserably.
“You did? When?” Victoria demanded in an authoritative voice that
always made me a little scared of her, at least when it was about a deadline or
a mock-up.
Four months, seventeen days, two hours, and thirty-four minutes ago to be
precise.
“Recently,” I said flippantly, hoping to end the conversation, but I noticed
a few other heads in our marketing office turned toward me. I mentally
cursed whoever thought up the open-concept office. Whoever it was must
have led such a terribly boring life that he or she had to feed on coworkers’
gossip for entertainment.
“What happened?” Sarah inquired. “I thought you two were high school
sweethearts.”
“We just grew apart.” Which was somewhat true. Six months ago, Bryce
had left on a trip to backpack through Europe to “find himself.” Along the
way, he’d found Jade Jeffries, a free-spirited, yoga-loving social media
influencer who evidently set his soul alight and transformed his inner being.
Bryce’s words, not mine.
And that was enough for him to pack his bags and move across the country
from Wisconsin to Florida to be with her.
