The Highly Inappropriate Little Boots
Marina
I DIDN’T LISTEN to my gut.
I should have.
But I didn’t.
Instead, I freeze when it happens, as if I were surprised. Like there
weren’t a million signs warning of it before.
It.
A hand reaching closer. A smile. I don’t have time to understand what’s
happening before his fumbling fingers curl around my ear, clumsily tucking
a strand of hair behind it.
It’s funny what goes through your mind in a moment like this. For some
reason, my immediate thought was, You didn’t need to do that. The braid in
my hair secures most of the stray waves from my face. Seems unnecessary
actually. But once I’m finally aware of the touch, I jerk back.
“Whoa,” is all I can think to say.
“Whoa,” my boss repeats with a smile.
My boss.
Dustin Barrie’s polished shoes scoot forward on the carpet, dragging his
butt across the coffee table’s glass and closer to the sofa I sit on. His knees
cage me in.
“The way you’ve been looking at me lately … your smile is like
sunshine on a rainy day.”
“Wish it weren’t,” I blurt out.
That’s when his face falls.
I never say the right thing at the right time. I wish I could say this is the

Barrie, might trust me more than he should.
I believe in signs. When I interviewed and realized this company was
owned by Dustin Barrie—the son of my hometown mayor—it felt like
kismet. A fellow Massachusetts local, all the way out in California? What
are the odds? It felt great—not at all like the gut feeling I get now. But I
should have guessed that a man who grew up sitting in the royal high chair
always gets what he wants, even three time zones away from Never Harbor.
Overall, I like working the reception desk at Barrie Wine & Spirits. I’m
good at it—the spreadsheets, the meetings, and the fast-paced environment.
Everyone walks with a mission here, like they have the whole life purpose
thing figured out. Every single person—all the way to our mail guy, Ben—
seems content. He says he’s trying to support his daughter, but I’d believe it
if he said this was his dream job.
I might not have a dream job, but I like it here. Unfortunately, the most
“life purpose” I have is tending to the small nursery of plants behind the
receptionist desk. But I’m finding my way. Slowly. Surely. At least my
botany degree hasn’t fully gone to waste.
Barrie Wine & Spirits didn’t give me any red flags—not like the flags
that had waved high when I filled out applications to pharmacy school.
Even after I scored in the top two percent of my PCAT, the idea of spending
