LILY
Glancing in the rear-view mirror, my vision is momentarily impaired by
high beams that pierce through the darkness like the eyes of a predator. My
heart pounds in my chest, threatening to tear right out of my ribcage as
adrenaline pumps through my veins.
We round a tight bend, and the shrill screeching of the tyres echoes in
my ears, joining the thumping of my erratic pulse and the taste of fear
lingering on my tongue. My fingers tremble as I grip the steering wheel for
all it’s worth.

The truth is, I don’t even know what the fuck is happening right now.
My evening started innocently enough—a simple drive into the city on a
cool autumn night. I marvelled at the beauty of the London streets, the way
they bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. Since losing my mum,
taking a drive has always been therapeutic for me, a way to clear my mind
and think, without the burdens of what awaits me at home—a home that
hasn’t been the same since she went into hospital, never to return.

I used to
think our home was something out of a fairy tale. To a child, it was like a
palace, but it no longer holds the same excitement it once did when I was
growing up, except for when Mia is home; even then, though, it holds the
stark reminder of our mother’s absence. Now there’s this added pressure of
always being under the constant watch of my stepfather, Richard. I do, after
all, have a legacy to uphold.

My journey back to our estate on the outskirts of London, apart from
hitting some occasional traffic getting out of the city, is usually pretty
uneventful. When I hit the back roads only to have a car continue to tailgate
me, I pull closer to the grass verge, hoping whoever they are will overtake
me, but instead, they continue to get closer.

The road ahead is dark—with the exception of my headlights. There are
no other cars in sight, which only causes more nerves to stir inside of me. I
push my foot harder against the accelerator, and my engine roars in
response as my palms slip against the leather steering wheel.

The chase intensifies, my shadow persistent in their pursuit, showing no
signs of backing down. My mind races as I search for a way to escape, to
somehow outmanoeuvre the faceless threat behind me. Despite how fast I
attempt to go, the vehicle remains hot on my tail, inching closer with each
passing moment. They drive close to my bumper as I expertly weave
around the winding roads that are so familiar to me.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck.”
I keep expecting some kind of imminent impact at any second. My
knuckles are white, the skin stretched as my fingers lock around the steering
wheel, the sweat from my palms in combination with the road assist
threatening to be the damn death of me.

With each bend, the car’s headlights illuminate the otherwise deserted
road, casting long shadows that taunt me, a blatant reminder of the
impending danger.
