“Let’s get this party started!” Anna kicked off her shoes and boosted herself
onto the bar, winking at the tattooed, tough-guy bartender who pretended to
hate her shenanigans but had caught her more than once when she
shimmied herself off the bar.
No fear was her motto. You can’t fly if you’re worried about falling.
But you can dance when your heart is breaking. She was doing it tonight.
She rose to her feet, testing out a few hip bumps.
“C’mon, girls,” she called to the women in her soon-to-be-retired
burlesque troupe. “If the Glitter Girls are closing up shop, we’re going out
dancing. Get your gorgeous asses up here, and let’s shake this place up.”
She found Brittany in the crowd, who was out on the town for the first time
since giving birth to her daughter, Kate, and pointed a finger at her.
“Especially you.”
Anna saw no hesitation in Brittany’s gaze, which put a genuine smile on
her face. Once upon a time she would have had to coax Britt up onto a
stage. Now her friend popped to her feet and joined the small crowd, ready
to strut the marble Standing Room bar like it was a catwalk.
Anna cued the deejay to play the first bars of “Burlesque,” and the girls
took their places. They hadn’t specifically developed this number for their
swan song, but they’d been working on the sexy classic when four of the
ten girls in the group had admitted they needed to find full-time day jobs. It
seemed fitting to perform it tonight.
This was it.
The Glitter Girls were done.
Her throat tightened, and her eyes began to sting. Oh hell no. She pulled
her shoulders back, lifted her heart, and brightened her smile. Tonight was a
celebration. She could be devastated later, mourn the dream she and Tim
had created together, ugly cry, and annihilate her waterproof mascara. Her
girls deserved the best send-off she could give them, and that meant
keeping her shit together on stage.
God, she loved dancing with the troupe, and she didn’t want them to feel
bad for leaving. Everyone had to follow their own muse. Nothing lasts
forever.
She’d done what she’d set out to do. She’d made it in the Big Apple. Tim
would be so proud of her.
“C’mon, Evelyn, tonight’s your night,” she called to her newest belly
dancing student, Zane and Xavier’s foster mom. She was sitting at the bar
with an older man with dark brown skin and kind eyes.
Evelyn Barnes had secretly been attending classes for months and was an
excellent pupil, but her sons were going to freak when they saw their foster
mother shaking what God gave her up on the bar. Anna had been looking
forward to seeing their faces all week.
She kept her gaze on Zane and Xavier as the bartender assisted Mrs.
Barnes up onto the bar. Zane’s square jaw dropped, and his thoughtful gray
eyes shot wide. He turned to Xavier and pointed. His brother ignored him,
his intense pale blue gaze instead locked on his wife’s ass as she clambered
up onto the bar unassisted.
