“How about some breakfast?”
Margot looked up from her computer to see her Uncle Stan sticking his
head through the doorway.
When she didn’t reply right away, he added, “I’m buying.”
“I think I’m going to pass.”
“Come on, free breakfast with your favorite uncle? What could go
wrong?”
“I don’t know, something like this?” Margot said. She pointed to the
recently patched-up bullet holes in the wall behind her and then the ones in
her desk, which made enough of a mess she was planning to replace it.
Stan stepped into the office. “Hey, if I had known…”
“I’m not blaming you. My sister became a master manipulator or maybe
she was always manipulative and just became more blatant about it. Either
way, she tricked us both.”
“What if I were to tell you this breakfast invitation has nothing to do
with Melanie?”
“Is that what you’re telling me?”
“No, I said ‘what if.’”
“Then it is about Melanie.”
Stan sighed. “Yeah, I wish it wasn’t. I promised myself I’d see you,
maybe even buy some breakfast, without it being about Melanie, but I
waited too long.”
“It hasn’t been that long. When it comes to trouble, my sister doesn’t
waste time.”
“No, she doesn’t. So, breakfast?”
“Why don’t you just tell me what this is about?”
“Breakfast first.”
“Because I’m nicer on a full stomach?”
“Yeah, and I’m hungry. I skipped my normal breakfast because I was
planning to buy you some.”
“We going to that same little Mexican place?”
“Last I checked it was still the best around.”
“Could we just eat and not talk about Melanie?”
“We could, but I have a feeling you’re going to hear about this
eventually. I’d rather it be me that told you.”
“It’s that serious?”
“I wish I could tell it wasn’t.”
It was Margot’s turn to sigh; she really wanted to say no, but there was
nothing wrong with eating breakfast with her uncle. Despite how she felt
about Melanie, part of her did want to know what trouble her sister got
herself into this time.
“Fine, give me a few minutes and I’ll meet you there,” she told him.
“Great.”
Margot promised herself she’d listen but under no circumstances was
she getting involved.
Chapter 2
“So, who did she stab this time?” Margot asked once they’d both
finished their food.
“Nobody.”
“Really?”
“You shouldn’t look so surprised.”
“She killed two women in prison and manipulated a third into trying to
kill me. Stabbing seems to be kind of her thing these days.”
“Maybe you’re right. Stabbing certainly was involved. She was on the
wrong end of the knife this time.”
“That’s what happens when you start stabbing people. Sometimes they
stab back.”
“Yeah. You know a normal person would ask if she was okay.”
“I’m not normal and neither is she. I figured if she was dead you would
have led with that.”
