The Princess
My footsteps fell silently as I ran across the dewy field. I glanced over
my shoulder furtively and pulled my navy cloak tighter around my
shoulders. The thick wool material kept the chill of the night at bay and
prevented the moonlight from revealing the white material of my nightgown
underneath. I was panting by the time I’d crossed the distance between the
palace and the forest but I didn’t stop until I was well within the cover of
the trees. Finally, I reached a clearing amongst the dense foliage and paused
to catch my breath. My dark hair was spilling out of my hood where I had
tucked it, and I brushed it back as I looked around. The moonlight caught in
the tiny drops of dew that covered every surface and made them sparkle like
stars in the night sky.

do me harm, but my heart thundered nonetheless. Something was moving
slowly through the underbrush and I held my breath in anticipation as it
came nearer. It sounded large, a stag perhaps? As I watched, a magnificent
white form emerged from the trees. The mare’s long, wavy, white mane and
tail shone in the moonlight and the entire beast nearly glowed. But what
really caught my attention was the opalescent horn that rose up from
between its alert ears. A unicorn.

It was the purest, most breathtaking beast
I’d ever seen. She turned to look at me and my breath caught. Was this one
of the dangerous magical creatures father spoke of? Was this creature about
to gore me with its wickedly sharp horn? I should’ve run but I stayed rooted
in place. I was enraptured by the impossible animal before me. As she
approached with near-silent steps, all I could do was sit perfectly still –
frozen in place. She stopped right in front of me and I lifted my head to
meet her intelligent gaze. Everything seemed to still for a moment as she
