OH NO YOU DON’T, COWBOY!
A short romantic mystery
by B.J. Daniels
“How can you be so sure it was Hawk Garrett who broke into your house?”
the sheriff asked eyes narrowing, bushy gray eyebrows bunching.
“I saw him running away.”
Sheriff Wally Finch leaned forward. “You’re telling me, you
recognized him from the back in the pitch dark?”

“I’ve seen him in the dark before from the back, Sheriff. I’d know
that particular behind anywhere since I’ve seen him naked. After all I was
married to him for twenty-four of the longest hours of my life.”
The sheriff shook his head. “Hawk swears he was driving by, saw a
prowler trying to get into the back of your house and chased him away.”
“He just happened to be driving by my ranch at almost three in the
morning?” she asked with a sigh. “The only person I saw was Hawk
hightailing it off my property.”

“Let’s say it was Hawk, what exactly did he take from your house?
Come on, you said he was running away after breaking in, what’s he
carrying? He must have taken somethin’.”

She hesitated and saw the sheriff’s blue eyes light up. Like everyone
in this county, no one wanted to believe Hawk Garrett could do anything
wrong. The only mistake the county favorite had made according to local
scuttlebutt was marrying Josephine Russell even for twenty-four hours.
“I’m sorry,” the sheriff said trying not to grin. “What did you say he
took from your house?”

Josie sighed again, wishing she had grabbed her .22 rifle last night
and at least maimed him. “I don’t know what he took, if anything. I just
know I caught him running away from my house in the middle of the night
after he broke in.”

“Right, that small broken window off the back porch,” he said
nodding. “Could have been the wind.”
She got to her feet. “That would be convenient for Hawk if the wind
broke the window to give him access to my house. Clearly, you aren’t going
to do anything about this.”

“Maybe if you actually saw his face.”
Josie swore. “I saw plenty of him. Next time I’ll wound him, so I
have proof.” She turned to leave.
“I doubt there will be a next time.”

She stopped at the door to turn back to look at the sheriff. “You ever
met the Hawk Garrett I know? Whatever he was looking for on my ranch,
he didn’t find it. He’ll be back. But this time, I’ll be waiting for him with a
loaded gun.”

“Now, Josie–.”
She didn’t stay around long enough to hear what he had to say.
Storming out into the beautiful Montana afternoon, she fought to rein in her
fury. Hawk Garrett had been getting away with everything short of murder
from as far back as she could remember.

He’d been cute and precocious in
grade school. In high school, he excelled at every sport he tried, especially
riding wild broncos. The buckle bunnies screamed his name for at least
eight seconds every time he rode a bronc at the local rodeo. It didn’t hurt
that he was so damned handsome and built like the proverbial a brick
outhouse.
