The City in Ashes
vander rode away from Silver, his heart heavy. He glanced behind
his shoulder to see the castle looming behind them, smoke curling
from the hole in the wall. A hole that Darwin had created.
Evander closed his eyes, but all he could see was Cordelia’s face,
devoid of all and any emotion, almost lifeless as she sliced Marianna’s
throat with a dagger, a smile on her face. Marisa had watched, along with
his father’s guards and Silver’s. For all Evander knew, the people would
revolt against Cordelia for murdering her own mother, the queen.
However, he knew that it wasn’t Cordelia’s fault. Whatever had
happened, it had happened while she was down in the dungeons beneath the
castle. The Ostrerean woman had done something to the woman he loved,
and he wasn’t quite sure how to save her.
Darwin had remained silent as they road away from Silver’s borders, the
Chieftain not even speaking to any of his men left standing. Evander
wondered if the man was regretting his decision to come back instead of
staying behind in Cealliotis with Crawn.
Evander wanted to be there for the chieftain. His wife was killed before
his very eyes, his only daughter the one behind the dagger that had ended
Marianna’s life. And just like that, Darwin had snapped his fingers for
Evander to leave and he followed, despite how badly he wanted to stay
behind and keep Cordelia safe from his father’s clutches.
Still, what Darwin said did make sense. If he was going to save the
woman he loved, he would need to be alive and kicking for that to happen.
If he had gone in their fangs and claws blazing, he no doubt would have lost
his life.
To Cordelia no less.
“Where are we going?” Evander broke the silence, ushering his horse
forward to catch up to the Chieftains. “Back to Cealliotis?”
Darwin shook his head. “Not quite. We’re going back to Helithis.”
“Helithis?” Evander echoed in dismay.
The last time he had been there, it was nothing more than under attack
from Xander’s men. Many men, women, and children were killed just for
the sport of it. It was because of that, that Darwin stayed behind to liberate
what little people were there while both Evander and Cordelia went ahead
to confront the king of Gold.
Darwin nodded, not sparing the prince a glance. “There’s a lot of rebels
there that would be happy to join our cause. I don’t want to loose any more
of my men to your father’s sword. I certainly don’t want them near my
daughter.”
