Mel
The whole room was holding its breath as I stood up and said, “No. It’s
too risky. We won’t take the mission.”
The Demon Hunter Agency asked too much this time. I refused to risk the
lives of my new coven-mates when I’d just gone to considerable lengths to
save them.

Assistant Director Demetri Foster glared at me from across the
conference room table, the small box containing the so-called infernal
antidote pendant visible in front of him. The pendant’s large, brilliant blue
tourmaline was deeply embedded in lava rock.
Either they truly believed the pendant would let me survive crossing the
threshold… Or they wanted me to test it out for them and potentially die in
the process.

“Mel, consider your next words carefully,” Demetri said slowly. “For
your own sake and that of your fledgling coven.”
I glanced at the twins, Hudson and Jackson, who sat on either side of me.
They had the same pale complexions and long, dark hair, though Hudson’s
was shorter. The only other obvious difference between them was the long
scar across Jax’s face.

Hudson was our agent in charge, yet he clenched his jaw so tight I
doubted he would issue orders anytime soon.
Jax unbound his dark hair, then tied it back up in a topknot — something
I’d noticed him doing when nervous. He glanced from me to his brother, then
over to Nico, who sat two chairs away. He was closer to us, his fellow covenmates, than to Demetri, yet still at a distance.

Nico’s biceps bulged as he crossed his arms, his magenta eyes focused on
the infernal antidote pendant. His dark brown skin was darker than mine, and
his brow furrowed as he glared at the artifact.

I met Demetri’s gaze, my blood heating with anger and betrayal. “Now I
understand why you didn’t give us this mission straight out of the gate.”
Instead, he’d sent us on a preliminary mission to rescue victims at a
nightclub and help the Demon Hunter Agency identify the vampire culprits.
Any coven could’ve completed that mission, though I’d long been the DHA’s
favorite to send after vampires.

In truth, Demetri had only sent us to test how well we worked together.
This was the real mission he’d planned for us all along.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a figure weaving its way through the
desks outside the glass wall of the conference room. My mentor and
supervisory agent soon pushed through the door. The nearby charm’s lever
rose with an audible pop, allowing in the normal hum and conversation of the
DHA desk jockeys at work.

As the door sealed shut, Nimue Wildes pulled the charm’s lever with her
prosthetic hand. All outside sounds from the DHA day shift faded as the
soundproofing charm shielded us once more. When she turned, her long, red
warrior’s braids fell behind her shoulders.

“You must be out of your mind,” she said without preamble.
To hear her speak to her superior in that way shocked me, though
Demetri didn’t even blink. Nimue’s and Demetri’s covens had been friends
since their Demon Hunter Academy days.
