A thick haze filled my head and blurred my vision. I tried to touch
my face, but cold, hard metal stopped my wrists.
Handcuffs. How did I get into handcuffs?
I jerked my arms forward, trying to break the metal confinement.
Sharp pain exploded in both my wrists as the metal edge of the handcuffs
dug into my flesh.
Pointless struggle is pointless. I forced myself to relax and clear
away the cloud of confusion. It slowly gave way, draining from me like
water going down a clogged drain. Whoever had taken me did an excellent
job. I couldn’t fight back if I couldn’t focus. On any other person, their
efforts might have succeeded, but drugs don’t hold up well against someone
as stubborn as me.
Gradually, my vision sharpened. I was in a white room. The walls, floor,
and ceiling were spotless. Not even a speck of dirt or the tiniest of cracks
marred the walls, providing no reference point for me to gauge the size of
the room. I only saw white. Endless white.
I sat in a plain wooden chair. Shackles held my ankles tightly against
the chair’s legs. The handcuffs were looped around the chair’s back.
Something must be holding the chair to the ground because it had not
moved during my struggles.
I was trapped. Fortunately, I am a wizard, a badass capable of tapping
into the powers of Creation and controlling forces once wielded by gods.
I’m also not modest. The chair didn’t stand a chance against my ego, much
less my magic.
I reached out with my senses, searching for the ambient magic that
fills almost every corner of the universe. A soft whisper vibrated against my
skin. Tendrils of cosmic force licked against my body, seeping in and out of
my pores, massaging the tiny piece of the cosmos that rested within me. I
allowed myself to fall into the tendrils, giving myself to the invisible waves
of power. The endless white room faded to the back of my mind, shrinking
to a mild nuisance on the edge of my consciousness. Like the crash of an
ocean wave, the magic came. Chaos roared in my ears, bludgeoning my
mind with an intensity that still felt staggering even after years of magic
use.
With a concentrated effort of will, I pushed the forces of Creation
through my body and into the handcuffs.
Nothing happened.
What the fuck?
My magic wasn’t working.
Wizards are capable of feats that would make mortals quake. Entire
continents have fallen before the might of human practitioners. But magic is
also our undoing. The Craft seduces and empowers. We become reliant on
our preternatural abilities and forget how to survive without them. When
they are taken away, we are useless.
I am in decent shape. Lean muscles and little fat cover my 6’2”
frame. Yet, without my magic, in the cold loneliness of endless white, I was
as useless as any other wizard deprived of magic.
Clap… Clap… Clap…
The sound came from behind me. Clapping. Hands clapping.
Someone was coming. I forgot rationality and struggled to turn around to
face my captor. Of course, I failed.
“That was a good try, Alexander.”
