Lavender Fields

Tim sighed. ‘Do we really have to?’ Even while he had phrased the
question, he had looked for a place on the road where he could stop the car.
‘Pleeeease, that light is magical and so different to ours.’
He smiled. Donna’s voice didn’t even try and conceal her enthusiasm. And
she was right. The light in the Provence was something close to magic.
Even he could see that, unromantic as he was. He just wished she wouldn’t
do this every damn evening when the sun was starting her daily descent to
bed.

He found the entry to a field way and swerved into the narrow road. He
was glad they’d rented the small Citroen as it was very easy to manoeuvre
around for their daily discoveries and adventures.
Off her seatbelt snapped and after a quick kiss on the side of his face
Donna flew out of the car, armed only with her small camera and
determination to take photographs of yet another perfect sundown.
As she made her way to the end of the horizon he watched her, an ethereal
being, golden hair floating in the slight wind, summer dress competing with
the lilac of the lush lavender fields that brought the scent of nature to him

He let it stand ajar, breathing in deeply. The air was wonderful, warm but

The low sun shone in his eyes, and he closed them, his thoughts trailing
off while he enjoyed the wonderful scent of lavender in the evening…
His own snore woke him up. He blinked, wiping his mouth. Did he fall
asleep? He massaged the left side of his neck catching the time on the
dashboard. Oh. Almost twenty minutes had passed since he had stopped the
car.

‘Donna?’ He looked around. He was alone.
The light had gone further, the sky now showing an eclectic mix of an
artist’s colouring palette with much purple and a deep shade of pink and
some smears of faded orange.
He got out of the car and stretched. ‘Donna? Come on, I’m hungry and we
need to move if we still want a place at Le Moulin d’Or.’
She should’ve reacted to that. She had been overly excited to get to that
restaurant.

He walked towards the clearing where she had headed. ‘Hun, come on,
please don’t be silly.’
Donna wasn’t someone to play cheap pranks on him but maybe she’d seen
him doze in the car and now wanted to pay him back for his insolence in the
presence of such beautiful nature. She’d done it before but in a teasing way.
Not vanishing and letting him worry about her.

He sighed and started to walk faster. A terrible thought entered his mind.
What if something had happened to Donna? What if she had sprained
