GABI
His hand grasps my arm as a car whizzes by, horn blaring.
The metal misses me by inches and I stumble backward, thrown
off balance. He pulls me into his chest, holding me as the car speeds
off into the distance. They slam on the brakes as an afterthought when they
come to the stop sign at the end of the street and then whip through the turn,
disappearing quickly around the corner.
“Jesus, Gabi, are you alright?” He turns me around, looking me up and
down, and for a shocked moment I’m surprised that there’s nothing sexual
behind his gaze. And then I realize he’s looking for injuries.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I look at my hands, my arms. I’m totally fine.
My heart thumps at a wild pace, a sheen of sweat now coating my body
when only a minute ago I was complaining about the chill in the air.
“Are you sure?” His brow is furrowed, his eyes dancing across my face.
I nod, pushing my hair back over my shoulder. I realize as I do that my
hand is shaking, and his eyes follow the movement; he sees it too.
I clear my throat and smooth down my dress. Across the street, a couple
holding hands walks a small fluffy dog. They watch us, murmuring to each
other, and then the woman shouts to us, “Are you alright?”
I nod, waving to her. “Yeah, I’m fine, thank you!” They nod and
continue on their nighttime walk. I turn back to Zeke. “I can’t believe
they’re driving that way through a residential neighborhood,” I scoff,
turning back toward the street with my head on a swivel, searching for other
speeders. “They’re going to kill somebody.”
He follows my lead, his piercing blue eyes searching the road as I lead
us across. He stuffs his hands in his pockets, his enormous frame looming
in my periphery, and the look of concern plastered on his face slowly melts
into his usual scowl as he falls into step beside me.
“So what was it you were saying about not needing me to walk you
home?”
I cross my arms and throw him a glare, his smirk annoyingly charming.
“If anything, you held me up twenty minutes, putting me perilously close to
danger. If I had walked home by myself, I would have been nowhere near
that car.”
“I held you up twenty minutes? You were talking to your sister for an
hour before you were finally ready to go. I got through an entire drink
waiting for you to finish chit-chatting.”
He’s not wrong. Stephanie talks like Newton’s first law of motion––at a
constant velocity until acted upon by an external force.
I hold my chin up. “I never asked you to walk me home.”
“No, you didn’t.” He knocks my elbow, a smile falling across his face.
“But I don’t mind.”
