Mayor’s Mansion, The Hill, England
BRIAR
“I don’t care that it’s the night before my wedding,” I hiss. “If your dad’s
summoned the demons to devour you, then we should be running.”
“I don’t run.” Maxton tightens his arm around my waist. “I fight.”
Maxton is my gorgeous college aged cousin with dirty blond curls and
caramel skin. His hair is pulled back by a white ribbon at his nape.
Since we’re both only children who’ve lost our mums, we’ve clung to
each other in the midst of our loneliness, while raging at the world.
He’s three years younger than me, and I’d do anything to protect him.
I’d die for him.
My pulse flutters in my throat. My heart beats wildly.
The wood-paneled ballroom gleams with a checkerboard marble floor and
high, molded ceiling. Ranks of glittering chandeliers chase the shadows to the
edges of the room, and silver drapes hang at the arched windows out to the
starry night.
I wrinkle my nose against the perfumed, intoxicating scent of the
ballroom, which lulls me into a drowsy state.
I clutch onto Maxton’s shoulders, as we dance amongst the swirl of
beautiful people in the Mayor’s mansion. There’s a ripple of excited chatter,
as the guests laugh and gossip, taking selfies at one of the biggest events of
the year.
My wedding tomorrow will be the biggest.
My blond hair is damp with sweat, and my feet in tight black shoes ache.
My muscles are heavy with exhaustion. All day, I’ve been supporting a
patient with diabetes at the clinic, and I’d give anything to be back there
working, rather than partying in this mansion.
Somewhere, my fiancé is preening amongst all these peacocks with their
black tie and bejeweled evening dresses, showing off that he’s marrying into
the Mayor’s family because he’s the prestigious Doctor Oliver Greel and runs
the only clinic in our town.
Who cares that this is an arranged marriage between our families?
Oh yeah, I fucking do.
Tomorrow I will become Mrs. Briar Greel.
On the Stones, I hate it.
Fuck, I’ll be stuck with a surname that sounds like a dying rat.
Tonight, is my last night of freedom.
Except, when was I allowed a choice in anything? When did any of us,
who are trapped in The Hill, have any control over our fated futures?
Love is a fairy tale.
What’s real is my career and ambition. I’m a doctor as well, and the only
chance that I have to practice is by marrying Oliver.
What’s real is protecting my cousin.
What’s real is saving this town from the demons who steal us and drag us
into their underworld.
Suddenly, the crowd feels too close. My chest tightens, and I struggle to
breathe. Booming laughter and blaring music surrounds me. I’m smothered in
the aroma of champagne and rich canapes.
And all to celebrate a marriage that I don’t want but I can’t stop.
