“Absolutely not,” Josephine said, fighting the desire to cross her arms over
her chest. Whenever she did, her mother always picked up on it.
Her mother stood in the kitchen, staring back at Josephine, who returned
the look with defiance and frustration. Her determination could frustrate
Josephine beyond belief. Perhaps she got her fiery personality from her
mother. No. She refused to believe that she was, in fact, her mother’s
daughter. Her fiery personality came from the abyss.
“If you seriously court with Edward, or any man for that matter, then all
of these dinner dates will stop,” her mother said. There was an edge of
slyness to her mother’s tone that made Josephine want to stomp her feet and
scream. Why, why, couldn’t she just move ahead on her own?
“They would also stop if you stopped planning them,” she quipped
back.
“I’m just trying to see to your happiness, Josephine.”
Josephine could hear her papa chuckle in the room around the corner.
She silently cursed him for not coming to her aid but knew that he was wise

“Josephine!” Her mother pressed a hand to her chest. “You don’t mean
that.”
“Mama—”
“There plenty of men in town who would be glad to marry you,” her
mother interjected. “You’re pretty enough.”
Josephine clenched her mouth tight to prevent from squawking like a
furious bird.
“Mama,” Josephine tried again, forcing the softness in her tone. “I
understand you are trying to help and I appreciate that. I don’t know what I
want out of my life, but I know that settling down with a man that you
present to me isn’t what I want. I want to make my own decisions about my
life.”
The only response Josephine got to her openness was pursed lips from
her mother. Why did she have to be like this? Constantly trying to manage
every little aspect of Josephine’s life.
Josephine kept her gaze on her mother, silently waiting for a better
reply.
“Okay,” her mother said simply.
“Okay?” Josephine asked. “What do you mean okay?”
“I mean, okay,” her mother said. “What if we have a family dinner at
your house tomorrow night?”
It was Josephine’s turn to stand in silence. Dinner at her house? They
hadn’t done that since before William left for the war.
Why did her mother suggest that? Josephine knew that her mother
