Darcy
January 1815
DARCY YOU SIMPLY MUST stop being so pig-headed about
this. Georgiana will do perfectly well in Bath with Lord Palmer
and his family. Why do you insist on sending her to Kent to suffer Aunt
Catherine? Bath is five times more thrilling for a girl of her age.”
I glanced up from the letter I was writing at my cousin, Colonel Richard
Fitzwilliam, as he paced a hole in my new Turkish rug. “The location is
immaterial. Georgiana has had a most trying year, and I prefer something of
a respite for her before your lady mother begins preparing her for her come
out.”

“So, why not let her stay with you at Pemberley?”
My pen paused. “Because I will be in Scotland.”
“Scotland! What the devil for?”

I shook my head and resumed my letter. “I do not expect you would
understand. It is something I must do. That is all.”
Richard kept pacing, sending hisses and dark looks my way. “You’re
right. I don’t understand. In fact, I don’t understand almost anything you’ve
done all summer. And why are you and Bingley suddenly no longer
speaking?”

I carefully dipped my pen, hoping Richard had not perceived the flinching
of my cheek or the quaking of my hand. “Who said that? We simply have
not seen one another since summer.”
“Ah. And I suppose that was not the cut direct Miss Bingley gave me
when I passed her in London, but merely an instance of bad timing.”
“Undoubtedly. Do try not to manufacture intrigue where none exists,
Richard. I am going north for a period of privacy and reflection—”
“Privation and misery, you mean.”

I arched a brow and dipped my pen again. “And while I am away, I wish
for Georgiana to visit our aunt. She will be quite happy in Kent.”
“Look, you may put whatever suffering you like upon yourself, but why
punish Georgie? I thought Lord Palmer’s daughter, Lady Sophia, was her
particular friend. Has she not invited Georgiana to attend the pump rooms
with her?”

“An invitation Georgiana only accepted to be polite. You and I both know
how she loathes large gatherings of frilly-frocked fussbudgets.” I dipped my
pen and continued writing.

“Which is why it will do her good to become used to such environs, for
such will, undoubtedly, be her future. Come, Darcy, if you would have her
ever learn to be at her ease in much company, she must be permitted to
experience it before her come out. Now, if you send her to Bath—”
“Out of the question.”

Richard braced his hands on my desk and dropped to eye level with me.
“If this is about what happened in Ramsgate last year…”
I glared up at him. “Nothing happened in Ramsgate. Nothing at all. Are
we quite understood?”
