ON NIGHTS LIKE TONIGHT, I did not belong and was to stay in my
room. On nights like tonight, I wanted more than anything to be where
everyone was. On nights like tonight, I sneaked out of my room, frightened
of what would happen if I got caught.
An icy gust of wind shot through the small passage, pushing against
me. It urged me to turn back. Each step through the concealed passage filled
me with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. My hand slid across the
frigid, iridescent, ivory-colored wall. It came to a sudden halt as my fingers
discovered the crescent indented shape, the only sign of an exit. I had found
the same shape hidden in my locked room years ago.

My finger traced the crescent shape, and it began to expand. Gradually,
it transformed into a full circle, growing large enough for me to pass
through. I pulled the hood of my black robe over my head to hide my long
white hair that radiated any light around. I wrapped the robe tighter around
the white shimmering fabric of the nightgown I wore underneath it. With a
mix of unease and excitement, I stepped through the moon-shaped opening.
And just as quickly as it had changed, the circle reverted back to its original
indented crescent shape, sealing the hidden passage behind me.

My left hand gripped the hood and my right clutched the robe to keep
it in place as I approached the light ahead. No light from my hair or gown
could escape from the robe if I was going to watch from the shadows of the
upper floor.

My heart stopped, and the weight of each breath grew heavy within my
chest as waves of emotions from below washed over me as I crept towards
the railing. Happiness, love, jealousy, and unbridled hatred crashed into me
from the guests below. The strength of so many emotions at the same time
felt like a physical form of those emotions slammed into me.

I closed my eyes and concentrated on my own emotions of excitement
and fear, drowning out the others. Gradually, the foreign emotions faded, or
perhaps I was learning to shield myself from them.
I could hear the voices before their owners came into sight as I peeked
over the railing. I scanned the faces of people gliding across the ballroom in
dance. Not seeing her among those dancing, I looked towards the
mezzanine, where the thrones were, hoping to catch a glimpse of her.

A large, golden crystal throne glittered in the ballroom light. It was
adorned with shimmering silver crystals shaped to depict the various phases
of the moon. There, the queen of the Moon’s Golden Era sat. Positioned to
the left of the queen’s throne was another resplendent golden crystal throne,
its back draped with a somber piece of black fabric. A smaller, silvery
crystal throne, this one with golden shapes of the phases of the moon, sat to
the right of the queen’s throne. It was there the young princess sat.
