SAEMILIUS

Screams rip the air, and the metallic smell of blood rises into my nose.
I listen fearfully to the sounds of the soldiers outside, their metal
armor pounding into the ground with each step. The shouts and screams, the
gut-wrenching sound of swords cutting through flesh, and the crash of
buildings being destroyed make me want to throw up.
My heart pounds in my chest the longer I stand there.
I know we have to stay hidden if we want to avoid being caught, but it’s
unbearable not to jump to action.

I look over at my beloved, who shakes with fear. I reach out and take her
hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
“It’s okay,” I whisper. “We’re safe here. As long as we stay quiet, they
won’t find us.”
But Liza’s eyes are filled with disbelief.
The sound of the soldiers getting closer makes me tremble. We’re running
out of time.
“What are we going to do?” she asks, her voice trembling. “They’re going
to find us. I know it.”
I press my hands to my ears and shake my head to drive the pain-distorted
faces of our neighbors out of my thoughts. We need a plan, but the
commotion outside makes it hard to concentrate.
The moment is finally here.

I expected an attack from Monsteress, but now that the presumption
becomes reality, I just want to jump on my horse and flee.
“Aemilius?” her petite voice penetrates into my consciousness and brings
me back to reality. “We gotta get out of here.”
I think for a moment, trying to clear my head, and then remember the plan
that has been set in stone for months. “We don’t have time to run. Hide as
we practiced, and I will hold back the soldiers!” A slight push is enough to
lead Liza toward our bed.

Our one-room hut is cramped, but it’s the only shelter we have in the hot,
arid climate. The walls are made of rough-hewn logs, and the roof is
thatched with straw to keep out the sun.
Inside, the hut is stiflingly hot, and the air is thick with the smell of sweat
and dust. There’s a small bed in one corner, covered with a thin, threadbare
blanket. In the center of the room, there’s a small table and two chairs, and
a few pots and pans are stacked in the corner.

I had been forced to flee my home because of family circumstances. I
wandered the desert for weeks, searching for a safe place to settle. On the
brink of collapsing, I had almost given up hope when I stumbled upon this
small hut and a girl who offered me a place to stay. I had gratefully taken
refuge inside. That girl was Liza, and since then, a year has passed.
