Coral’s small hands pressed against the
cool glass of the window. She knew just
how much to push, how much weight to press against the glass to open it.
Even so, she held her breath. The window opened with an almost inaudible
swoosh. Coral paused a moment before sliding one leg through, then the
other, shimming her body through the small opening.
The air outside felt crisp against her skin and instantly sent a small
chill down her neck and vibrated down her spine. Coral’s toes struggled to
grip against the smooth wall, and as she slowly lowered her body down
closer to the ground, her fingers slipped off the damp windowsill. Coral
grunted as she landed, harder than she would have liked, in the cold dirt.
“Is the door broken?” A voice called from inside the main living
area.
Coral stood and wiped her now filthy hands against her jeans. The
soft dirt of her grandmother’s garden squished under her shoes as she
walked towards the voice. “Nope. Just testing out my ninja skills.”
“Is that right? How’s that working out for you?” Her grandmother
smiled and waved Coral to come back into the house through the kitchen
door.
“A few more days and I’ll probably be shipped out to protect a royal
family in a castle with dark corners and high ledges.” The warm room was a
welcome contrast to the frigid outside. Coral’s clothes and hair stuck to her
skin from the misty fog of the morning.
Dorthea laughed and kissed Coral on the top of her head,
“Somewhere fancy indeed. Here is a tip for you, Love…”
“You have a tip for me? A tip about being a ninja?” Coral giggled.
“Yes, in fact… Now listen close,” Dorthea leaned in and lowered
her voice to a whisper. Coral could smell the sweet perfume of roses and
apple blossom on her grandmother’s skin. “When jumping out of a window,
try not to land directly in front of the enemy.”
Coral laughed. Her grandmother was right; she needed to work on
her landing as much as her escape.
“Here, take this.” Dorthea’s wrinkled hand tossed a small leather
satchel across the room. Coral reached her hands out too late, and the bag
fumbled, landing awkwardly and rolling under the side table. “Nice catch,”
Dorthea joked.
“You weren’t even looking; how did you know I missed?”
“Because I know you better than anyone else in the entire world.”
“What is this, anyway?” Coral turned the simple tan bag over in her
hands. The leather felt soft between her fingers.
