Once upon a time, in a place familiar and yet recently changed in the
most peculiar way, a princess named Snow White sat in a sun-dappled
glade, a fawn held tenderly in her arms.
“I wish you could tell me how you broke your leg,” she said, wrapping
the delicate limb in a length of cloth so that the splint she’d made could
help the growing bones heal. “The forest is such a dark and dangerous place
these days.”
The other forest animals crept close as if the princess was the only
source of warmth and safety in all the world. Fuzzy rabbits nuzzled up
against her leg, birds hopped and twittered on her shoulders, and the fawn’s
mother fretted as she oversaw the procedure, occasionally nudging the
princess in the back with her wet black nose. Once Snow White was
satisfied with her work, she helped the fawn to stand and clapped her hands
as it wobbled around the clearing, doing its very best to frolic.
“Oh, that’s so much better! You really will be fine, you know. You just
have to be careful for a few weeks, until it doesn’t hurt a bit. Then we’ll
take off the splint, and—”
She kicked away a vine that seemed almost to be angling for the fawn’s
spindly legs, trying to trip the tiny creature. The glossy green leaves were
threaded with purple…well, not veins. Cracks, really. Snow White had
noticed the cracks here and there in the woodland recently, and every time
she tried to inspect one of the leaves more closely, it slithered away.
“Just be careful, won’t you?” The fawn continued to frolic, and Snow
White looked to the doe standing guard. “Keep him close. Something is
wrong here, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.”
The doe inclined her head in understanding and stepped closer to her
charge.
“Goodbye! Goodbye to all of you! And please, do watch yourselves.
The forest is changed, and not for the better.”
Picking up her basket of supplies, Snow White glanced up at the
afternoon sun slanting through the trees. A chill wind blew, rustling her
cloak and reminding her that dark would soon fall. Even before things had
grown strange, the forest had never been a safe place to be at night. All the
animals knew where to seek shelter, and she didn’t want to be out on the
twisting paths alone. She had no weapons, wouldn’t even know how to use
one. Although her forest friends seemed to understand her better than ever,
she thought she’d seen people hunting between the trees. Among them was
her wicked stepmother’s huntsman, no doubt. But was he searching for
Snow White at the Queen’s behest, or was he on some other sinister
business shrouded in secrecy?
