A Comfortable, Adventurous
Career
“Hey, Phee, we’re heading into the playroom. Want to join us?” Randy’s
playful voice caught Sophia’s attention as she was wrapping up her
paperwork.
Turning around, the nurse saw a small group of men standing at the
door leading to their activity room. Her eyes watched them for a moment
before she started to shake her head slowly. “No thanks, Randy. I’ve got a
good book and a hot bath waiting at home for me.”
“Boo hoo!” Several men let their disapproval clear, with a couple
grabbing a few pieces of paper from a nearby desk, wadding them up, and
throwing them at her. She couldn’t help but titter a little as she swatted
away the mild attempts to dissuade her from going home. It wasn’t a full
laugh, but it was one of the first times in months that she had a genuine
positive emotion, no matter how fleeting. The smile was gone by the time
she leaned over to throw the paper in the trash, but she still felt a little
lighter.
Walking back into the room, Arlo waved at the others, indicating
they should go ahead and get started with whatever games they were going
to play. Not needing any further persuasion, the group became quite noisy
as they made their way into the large open room, ready to have some fun
after a challenging week. Arlo turned his attention back to his coworker,
and his demeanor shifted to reflect his concern. Once his eyes met hers, he
asked the one question she didn’t want to answer. “Are you doing ok?”
“I’m as ok as you would expect.” Sophia made sure she kept her eyes
fully trained on the papers in front of her so he wouldn’t see the tears that
were threatening to form.
Damn Arlo and his compassion. He’s going to make me cry.
The thought wasn’t malicious or sincere, mostly she knew what he
was going to talk about, and it was not a topic she wanted to discuss, not
after a long week.
Twisting her mouth and wiggling her nose to get rid of the pricking
of tears in her eyes, she offered a feeble smile. “I’m fine. Just tired. That
was a hell of a week. It’s amazing the guys are still so eager to stick around
here and play.”
Pulling up a chair, he sat down across from her, clearly not buying
her story or allowing her to change the subject. “It was a rough week, but
you know they have to wait for the next team. This isn’t about them.” His
stern expression lasted for a matter of seconds before returning to that
familiar look of genuine worry. “Really, are you ok? Do you need to take
some time off?”
She pressed her lips together, unable to meet his eyes. “You know
that it will be much worse for me if I don’t stay busy.”
She looked down as he placed a hand over one of hers. “Look at me,
Sophia.
