THE WALLS WERE painted a hideous mustard yellow, which she’d hated the
whole year she had lived there. She was never allowed to repaint the walls.
All that was left in the room was the bed that had been stripped of the
sheets, pillows, and blankets. Boxes stuffed as much as they would allow
were pushed against the wall of the room. There were only a couple of
boxes, as most of it had already been taken out to the moving truck.
Aria stood there, her light blue eyes staring at the emptiness of
everything. Her wavy brown hair swung behind her back as she turned,
rubbing her hand over her freckled face in exhaustion. She was quite
speechless, a weird feeling bubbling in the pit of her stomach. Was it the
annoyance of going to a new school? The frustration of moving again? She
had no clue what to expect or what to feel. Her parents always said they
moved because of their jobs.
Aria understood, but she didn’t even know
what their jobs exactly were; they never elaborated and always got
distracted. Her fists clenched at the thought, a strange pulsing like the beat
of a heart forming in her palms, and she blew out an irritated sigh.
A knock sounded on the door behind her, startling her out of her
trance-like state. She turned towards the door, her eyes settling on her
father. He waltzed into the room, his graying brown hair causing a halo of
silver. His smile made the edges of his dark eyes twinkle. He was always
smiling, especially when Aria was around, which usually brightened Aria’s
spirits, but not at this moment.
“Oh…hey, Dad,” she said in a bored tone, sounding almost dazed.
He continued to look happy as a crew of men and women appeared
behind him to grab the rest of the stuff from her room.
“Is something wrong, sweetie?” he asked, dropping his wide smile and
looking at her kindly.
“Oh, nothing…I—I just don’t like that we have to keep moving all the
time.” She stared down at her fidgeting hands.
“Oh…well…you know, your mother and I have…jobs that…keep us
on the move.” His gaze abruptly changed to the window, his feet tapping
anxiously on the floor.
That was what he had said last time, but still, it made Aria’s jaw
clench. She forced herself to keep her mouth shut despite the desire to ask
for the truth. Her fists grew tighter, the throbbing of her palms growing
stronger. Of course, she knew they were not doing anything shady despite
how secretive they were about it. Aria knew and trusted them too well to
think that; they were her parents, after all. If they didn’t want to tell her
things, they didn’t have to. Everyone has their own secrets. Even if Aria
wanted to know what they were.
“Yeah, I understand that.” Aria breathed in deeply, pushing down her
irritation. She glanced back at the room again, stepping out of the way as
the crew of men and women carried things past them.
“Well…what would happen if we moved into an igloo and some
friends threw us a housewarming party?” He changed the subject, drawing
Aria’s attention back to him
