Tick…Tick…Tick…
Michael watched the numbers skyrocket upwards in a blur. Each numerical
figure flashed and then advanced to the next before his eyes could focus on
a single digit. If he leaned in close enough, he could almost hear the hum of
passing time.
On the same screen, just to the left of the spinning digits, another set
of numbers climbed higher and higher. These numbers changed much
slower than the first set. Michael studied these numbers, correctly
predicting each number, and the next, and the next.
He counted: forty-six, forty-seven, forty-eight… he sucked in a deep
breath, feeling calmed by the steady movement, then exhaled long and
slow.
Fifty-seven, fifty-eight, fifty-nine, zero-zero, one, two, three…
The third set of numbers, which was the first if reading the screen
from left to right, were the slowest out of the three sets. In comparison, this
set of numbers seemed to take an eternity to change. Michael could glance
at the number, look around him, and go back to the number and it still
might not have moved. Currently, the number seemed to be stuck at six, but
Michael knew without a doubt that in exactly 14.23 seconds it would
change to the number seven.
Michael readjusted his seat. The fallen branch he was using as a
perch was less than comfortable, but he had a job to do. As uncomfortable
as he was at this very moment, Michael knew he would be even more
uncomfortable if he actually had to participate in the activities currently
taking place below him.
A gust of warm wind blew up from the forest floor. The surrounding
branches quivered in the moving air. The loose fabric of his shirt flapped
against his skin. He held his breath, allowing the air to warm him before it
dissipated into the atmosphere.
Far below his perch, Michael could tell they were getting closer
now. In a moment, he would see them sprinting through the underbrush,
each one desperately trying to make it ahead of the other.
The thump of footsteps on soft dirt forced Michael to focus on the
task at hand. His thumbs itched in anticipation, wanting nothing more than
to push the small button and stop the spinning digits to finally see the
outcome. Dragging his eyes away from the screen for just a moment,
Michael scanned the spaces between the leaves.
The girl came into view first. Her long limbs were just barely visible
through the trees, but he recognized her graceful movements and long gait
immediately. She was near the two-mile mark. Michael’s heartbeat
quickened in his chest. If she won, it would be a first for her, and he
wanted her to win. For a moment, Michael almost called down, yelling out
his cheers of encouragement. But at the last second, he decided against it.
He didn’t want his excitement to distract her.
