June pressed her hand firmly against the heavy wooden door. The grain
of the wood felt smooth below her touch. She couldn’t tell if the tension
sitting at the base of her neck was anger, annoyance, or worry, but she knew
there was only one way to get rid of it. She contemplated knocking, but she
had never knocked before and now was not the time to start. She pushed her
body weight against the thick wood and forced it open. The door slammed
open banging against the wall behind it before bouncing back and closing
again before she could step though.
From the other side of the door, June heard the unmistakable giggle
of her older brother. She opened the door again, this time with more ease
and saw Jeffrey sitting on the edge of his bed, laughing.
“What are you so upset about?” He laughed “The look on your face
when the door closed was hysterical.” In his hand, he held one end of a
fresh roll of gauze, the other end wrapped tightly around his ankle. The old,
yellowed gauze lay limp in a pile on the floor. The large cut on his leg
covered almost the length of her brother’s calf. The sight of it made June’s
stomach twist in a knot.
“You were injured rescuing a baby bear cub from a shark?” June
asked, trying to hold back a laugh that came from hearing her words and
how ridiculous she must have looked as the door swung back in her face.
June’s brother looked up and grinned, “well that story was better
than my last one.”
“Oh, you mean the one where you said you were skydiving while
riding a bull and one of his horns got you on the way down?”
A look of pride spread across his features, and he laughed. “Yeah, I guess
that was a little hard to believe. What do you expect me to tell my curious
followers?”
“I don’t know, the truth? Do you have to come up with these
horrifying stories every time a Sapling asks how you hurt your leg?” June
teased her brother. As much as it pained her to hear these outlandish stories
every time a new Tree Jumper came to the hideout, it felt good to see her
brother laugh. He had been through so much, they both had, but only he
had sustained the crippling injury.
“Well, it’s not like I’ll be getting any new stories anytime soon.
Looks like I’m never going to jump again, which means missions are out of
the question. We both know for the rest of my life I’ll be here training new
Saplings.”
June sat down next to her brother. She took the gauze from his hand
it had gotten tangled around a thick scar and then his frustration he had
neglected to wrap it correctly.
“Come here let me do it.”
He relented and gave his sister the gauze and said, “what would I do
without you.”
