SAIL AWAY
Aurora held her wrist band to the door lock. It buzzed and glowed an
angry red. She shook her wrist and contorted her arm upwards to get the
band closer to the lock. No use.
“Hold it higher.” Tad said. When it still didn’t work, he said, “Let me
see it.” She flashed him a death stare. It was a lock, not brain surgery.
“It’s not activated.” She swiped it again. The lock clicked to green and
back to red. “I’ll head down to the lobby and get it fixed. No worries.”

Aurora beamed up at her best friend’s cousin, Tad. He clearly wanted to try
the band himself, and she wasn’t going to let him have the satisfaction of it.
Not after he won the last four rounds of the highway letter game. It didn’t
bother her to go down to the ship’s lobby. Such detail and wonder, it was
hard to believe that she’d be on board this beautiful ship for two weeks,
relaxing in the sun and playing board games. Two of her favorite things.
“I’ll come with you. Give me your day bag. I’ll put it in my room for
now.” Spencer held out his hand for her broken day pack. She’d put one too
many things in it, and the zipper had split, spilling the contents all over the
lobby.

She pulled a few things out of the broken pack and handed them one at
a time to Spencer until his hands were overloaded. Bathing suit, Kindle,
sweatshirt, flip flops, and another shirt. She wanted to keep the bag, in case
she needed her passport or driver’s license.

Tad sighed. “I’ll come with you. I want to check things out.” He
grabbed his book from his pack. Tad never went anywhere without a book.
The trio headed down the hallway towards the grand lobby.
Aurora’s phone dinged. “Wow, that was fast.” She held her phone up for
Spencer. With a touch, the purple and black ship app dissolved into a photo
of them smiling. Aurora clicked through the four photos of the two of them,
and one with Tad standing distracted beside them. Spencer’s black hair,

slicked back and with a light curl at his collar, lay perfectly, like every
picture she had of them. But in this one, his eyes were finally the color they
were when she looked at him. In all the other photos she had of the two of
them, he had sunglasses on or his eyes glowed with his wolf. Here they
were light hazel, with the left eye having a slight golden amber tone.
She held out the phone for Spencer to see and stumbled into his arm as
they walked down the gangway. He reached round her and moved her to the
right.

“Didn’t see that giant pillar?” He pointed behind them and laughed.
“What? Nope. That flash thing, they were right.”
He took the phone.
