“IT’S TIME TO GO HOME, ASTRAEA.”
ASTRAEA
“They’ll never welcome you inside again.”
Chest quaking and spirit shaking, I ignore the smoky velvet voice
behind me and lunge for the Gates of Hell on Earth.
For the hundredth time, inertia propels me back, sending me hurling
into the air on six wings. Four don’t feel real. Then again, nothing feels real
here.
“I am Queen of Hell on Earth,” I deny the invasive presence, who has
trailed me for days in this space and time, unless it’s been longer. “Lucifer!”
I scream for my King, expecting him to show up any time.
Where the hell is he?
Shoving my way through the countless spirit figures proves to be much
more difficult than any other time. Their auras tangle with mine. Colors of
emotions burst into my spirit like fireworks sparkling inside me, detonating
from my heart. My hand skirts the soul energy, knowing I may harness the
powerful auras at any time. But I jump away like they’ve seared me. And
fly for the Gates again.
When the force sends me sprawling back, my wings impact with hers.
This time, she snarls and binds her hands around my aura strings, knotting
them and pulling me forward, holding me still against her. Fear drives its
blade through my spine. My first instinct is to struggle, to war with the
spirit because she’s the one being with equal power here.
“Astraea,” she demands my attention, her dark eyes staring me down
with icy brutality.
We deadpan in a stalemate of willpower, spirit against spirit with my
aura shining in flaming gold to her starless black. Everything fades to
silence. That new-birth heart hammers in my eardrums. I tremble in the
stillness, shiver from her likeness, so similar to Abaddon with her bronze
skin, dark curls settling around her lower neck, and those black hole eyes
with their gold eternity ring. Or this is simply how I perceive her, the one
way I can since she is half his soul.
Without missing a beat, the angel before me cups my shoulders, fingers
sweeping to my neck to cradle my face. “It’s time to go home, Astraea.”
As soon as I sag my shoulders in surrender, the angel gathers me into
her arms and holds me, nurtures me like a mother would. As if she has
watched me all my life from behind a veil, a frost-covered window.
One
that shattered, veil torn apart—the moment I beat my wings almost bloody
and plunged into the middle of the sky battle, stopping Lucifer and
Abaddon and the army in their tracks.
I have no memory of what happened after. Apart from waking here.
