Melanie straightened her back, stretching from side to side until she
heard a satisfying crack. She reached for her cup of coffee. Cold.
How long had she been looking in that microscope?
She drank it down anyway, needing the caffeine.
“Mark’s looking for you.”
Her colleague peeked inside only long enough to relay the message then
disappeared, probably to hide.
Melanie’s stomach twisted into a knot, coffee threatening to come back
up her throat. Footsteps resonated out in the hall. She quickly ran her hands
over her outfit, straightening her clothes and hair, not leaving one strand out
of place.
Mark—the Fartech CEO, her boss and uncle—strode in, back straight and
chin high, like he owned the place—which technically, he did. Melanie
pushed her anxiety aside and put on a practiced smile.
“Mark, how nice to see you. Did you finally come for a tour of the lab?”
A slight move of his eyebrows was the only visible sign that he had no
idea what she was talking about. He’d already forgotten their conversation
from two weeks ago when she’d asked him to reconsider her research
proposal and suggested that he come see the work she’d been doing. He’d flat
out refused. He preferred that she continue working on the same terraforming
research she’d been working on for the last five years.
She wasn’t actually
making anything better anymore, just different enough that Mark could
justify charging his customers for a newer model every year. She was sick
and tired of it, which was why she’d proposed something completely
different, but Mark didn’t like innovation.
“No.” He looked down at her like she was so far beneath him he
shouldn’t have to answer her inane questions. “I’ve come to give you a new
mission.”
Mission? She had never referred to her work as a geneticist as a mission
before.
She moved behind her desk and sat in her chair, keeping her hands under
the desk so he couldn’t see them fidgeting.
“You’re going to Mudden.”
Good thing she was sitting. “Excuse me?”
“You’re going to Mudden.”
There was no room for argument in his tone.
“I don’t understand. Mudden doesn’t allow strangers to travel to their
planet. And besides, why?”
The Fartech board of directors—which consisted of only her extended
family members—had held a board meeting recently to discuss Mudden. The
Mudden leader, Kemp, was dying of old age. He’d finally told his son Devon
the truth about flintoid. The Mudden people didn’t know—heck no one in the
system outside of her family knew—that flintoid, the fuel used by fast travel
engines, came from Mudden. Upon hearing the news, Devon declared that
Mudden was being underpaid and demanded more money or he would go to
Fartech’s competitors and tell them the truth.
