ETHAN
The worst part about trying to save everyone I’ve ever loved is that it was
probably going to get me killed in the process. The second worst part
was that I was going to have to marry the city’s vampire king in order to
do it.
Poppy Hawthorne, my best friend, paced back and forth in front of the
childhood bed I hadn’t slept in for the last six years, her long mane of fireengine red hair trailing behind her. “You can’t do this, Ethan. There has to be
another way.”
“There isn’t.”
“But they’re creepy. Like, are they dead or not?”
“I think the term you’re searching for is undead,” Tobias, Poppy’s twin
brother and my other best friend, put in. He sat cross-legged beside me on the
bed, trailing sparks of violet-colored magic idly between his fingertips and
giving me some serious side-eye.
Poppy paused in her pacing just long enough to give Tobias a withering
look that only twins are really capable of.
“They’re still alive,” I said, sighing. “Sort of. Mostly.”
“Sure. They also drink fresh blood every single day,” Tobias retorted. “Are
you going to let him bite you?”
“If I need to, in order to get him to agree to this.”
Poppy paused her pacing long enough to shoot me the withering glare this
time. “No. Just no. No biting. No nothing. He needs to keep his hands, his
fangs, and his everything else to himself.”
“I mean, if Ethan becomes his husband, he’ll need to put out eventually,
right?” Tobias said, giving me a sideways look.
“Nope!” Poppy replied, deadpan. “They’ll get separate beds, like a married
couple in a 1950s television show. And Ethan and I will be spinsters together
forever and ever.”
“On second thought, getting ravished by the vampire king might not be so
bad,” I teased her. Then, unwillingly, I sobered again, and it suddenly felt like a
nest of hornets had been kicked over in my midsection. The amusement
drained from me almost immediately. “I have to marry him. I don’t exactly
have another option here.”
“Because a mirror that hasn’t issued a prophecy in like a million years
suddenly woke itself up and started telling you bad stuff was coming,” Poppy
scoffed.
That was basically the long and short of it. I had been cleaning my
mother’s office about a month ago when the magic mirror belonging to
Gregory Ames, the founder of our coven, had abruptly begun speaking to me.
Given the fact that I have a weird effect on magic—when it even works near
me at all—I hadn’t even been that surprised.
But then it had shown me awful things. It had shown me the violence that
was coming between the vampires and the witches. Violence that would leave
the coven in ruins and the vampire population of the city decimated.
