Malaki never would’ve thought he’d find a friend and confidant in a wolf,
but that day in the swamp, Nixon broke through a wall around his heart and
memories. If it hadn’t been for the therapist, Malaki wouldn’t be standing
there watching as a broken pride was brought in to be healed by the family
who’d raised him.
He couldn’t think of his past, but he did at random points in time. And
now wasn’t a good time to go down the rabbit hole of his anger and therapy
fighting each other. There were new members taking Talon’s blood after
being saved by the pride. He and other Guardians had just arrived in their
emergency vehicles with five panthers, hurt and needing assistance. The last
thing he should be doing was reminisce about his attempted suicide, and
even if he did, he had to keep his head level in front of everyone. No one
would ever know about his darkest night in that swamp.
“Malaki?” someone called out, jarring him from his thoughts. Kraven
was rushing to his side as he pulled his long, dark hair up into a sloppy bun
on top of his head. “I need your help with getting these trucks parked back
in front of the house while they’re being seen by the healers.” Kraven,
Hope’s brother, tossed him several sets of keys.
He followed the male out to the trucks and moved them back around the
property to their designated places. They were emergency vehicles, and
they had to be ready at a moment’s notice. Having them scattered around
the back of the house could prevent a quick escape should the pride need to
evacuate. It sucked that the shifters had to be so prepared, but regardless, it
was a mundane task that might aid them in an emergency.
As he returned to the healer’s home and clinic to grab another vehicle,
four elder panthers were emerging from the door, heading out into the
woods. Talon, in his human form, was right behind them, watching as Axel
and Diesel followed them out into the forest behind the alpha’s home.
“Malaki?” Kraven called out, jarring Malaki from his observation of the
few pride members they’d just saved. “I still need your help.”
“What else?” Malaki offered, hoping his cheery disposition would keep
him from getting the same looks as before when he was an angrier
Guardian. Hell, he was still angry.
He’d just learned to suppress the younger
version of himself. He was older and somewhat wiser than he had been all
those years ago. He’d worked hard to get himself in the right mindset to
come back to the Shaw pride. Hiding in the swamps wasn’t going to help
him remain close to his sister.
Malaki hated he’d lied to Sofia about being better, but it was for the
best. That female had worried over him for far too long. They weren’t
mates, and he’d known that from the very beginning when they were still
juvenile cubs. There was no need to bring others down into his own
personal hell that waged war in his brain every moment of the day and
night. It wasn’t right to burden anyone.
