In a world full of constant distractions, sometimes it’s nice to just look at
the sea and ponder life.
However, my peace and quiet was suddenly shattered by the sound of
the doorbell. I groaned as I stood, a habit I had acquired over the last couple
of years, more than for an actual reason, and walked through the kitchen,
towards the door. As I glanced through the window, I saw a parcel delivery
van on the drive and a courier on the doorstep.
‘Coming!’ I yelled as loud as I could. The delivery drivers around the
area were quicker than Lewis Hamilton at the Monaco Grand Prix, dump
and drop their normal delivery tactic. By the time you get to open the door,
they’re already back in their van and driving off down the lane. But this one
greeted me with a smile and a very large box.
‘Thanks so much for holding on for me. I was out the back.’
He grinned.
‘No worries, madam.’
I wondered if he knew how old a simple word could make a woman
feel. I’m sure he didn’t. He only looked about twelve. Was he even old
enough to drive?
I frowned, trying to remember if I’d ordered anything.
‘It’s heavy to be honest. Do you want me to put it down somewhere for
you?’
Years ago, I wouldn’t have hesitated, especially if it was someone as
good looking and cheeky faced as this young pup, but these days you
shouldn’t just be inviting anyone into your house. I had two choices: the
first to let him in, and the second for him to leave it on the mat and me not
be able to budge it. Besides, he had an honest face. When he grinned again,
I made a split-second decision. He looked like a nice boy. And now,
laughing to myself, even I realised how old I sounded.
‘If you don’t mind popping it just there on the kitchen table, that would
be amazing.’
He did just that and headed back to the door.
‘Thank you. That’s so kind of you.’
‘No problem,’ he shouted over his shoulder as he headed back to his
van. ‘I’d have had to do that for my nan too. Bye!’
Cheeky sod!
Thankfully, I had just escaped the possibility that the man-boy I’d just
invited into my house wasn’t a serial killer. As I walked past the hall mirror,
I noted that the face reflecting back at me could be mistaken for someone’s
nan, even though I still felt ridiculously young on the inside.
My pondering session resumed as I thought about my life; the past, the
present and the future, although over the years, I’d learnt not to dwell on
what looms ahead too much. The reason for that was that I’d just celebrated
my seventy-first birthday. But I wasn’t sure I could really be seventy-one.
