“Hell no.”
That’s it. Official diagnosis: My best friend and her fiancé have
lost their minds somewhere between my front door and the couch.
It’s the only logical explanation they would suggest something so
blasphemous.
“But you’re so good at planning,” Sawyer offers. My best friend—who’s
currently on very thin ice—looks at me, her green eyes peering into the
depths of my soul while she bats her eyelashes and butters me up to get her
way.
I hate when she does this. Sawyer will toss out compliments like candy
on Halloween to convince me to do something. I hate it because her
methodology is effective and reproducible and works like magic.
Sawyer wants a margarita? All it takes is one comment about how I make
the best ones and bam, each of us has margaritas in our hands, rimmed with
salt and heavy on the tequila. Something needs to be fixed? One comment
about how handy I am, and the next thing I know, I’ve transformed into
Betty the Builder, digging out the massive tool kit my dad bought me for
Christmas one year. It’s my Achilles heel. I love being good at things and I
love being complimented about it.
Sawyer knows that and now she’s exploiting it.
“What happened to the truce?” Henry asks.
My gaze swings to the other traitor in the midst and I truly try not to
scowl. A valiant effort that falls short as my nose begins to scrunch and my
brows begin to furrow. Henry Parker may be one of the best wide receivers
in the NFL and the object of my best friend’s affection, but right now, he’s
tied with his fiancée for the number one spot on my shit list.
I called a truce, once; in the name of true love. Henry and Sawyer saw
that kind, one-time-only gesture and decided that was me waiving my white
flag. They’re traitors.
Henry had a moment of sheer idiocy after a season-ending injury and
decided to break up with Sawyer. Break up! How stupid. Something about
thinking he was nothing without football. Honestly, the whole thing was
dramatic on his part. But, Sawyer was devastated and she had shed so many
tears I was genuinely concerned about possible dehydration, so I asked the
one person I thought could help.
The olive branch I extended in the name of true love is now coming back
to whack me in the ass.
“I don’t get why we have to involve him.” My scowl worsens. “I’m
perfectly capable of doing it alone.”
Do I already have work up to my eyeballs and am on the brink of a major
burnout? Yes. Would planning a joint bachelor-bachelorette getaway add to
the mountain of pre-existing stress? Also, yes. But, no amount of stress
could convince me to voluntarily spend time with him. I need to stay far, far
away from that man and the idea of planning this little vacation sours my
stomach.
