Before I even open my eyes to greet the new day, I take a deep breath
through my nose.
The air around me smells like warmth and rich cologne and clean
laundry.
It smells like what I’ve always imagined home would smell like.
You know, the place you step into and instantly feel that everything
will be okay.
This isn’t Heaven— not that there’s a place for me up there, but that’s
not the point. This is real life. Meaning, I’m alive and breathing. I made it
out before the bomb went boom. I have Rex and Levi to thank for that.
Though, I don’t think I’ve properly paid them back for that whole thing.
I
don’t really count helping them save Jonas from the insane situation with
his father and that crazy asshole Leland. I also don’t count that I’m helping
Rex and Levi track down Levi’s uncle, so that they can kill that
motherfucker for his part in it. I’m still working on that, but I have a feeling
I’ll find him soon.
Wow. Seems like we all have fucked up family lives. We should start
a club. Though mine isn’t really fucked up, I suppose. It’s only tragic.
Anyway, almost getting blown up and saving Jonas from being
kidnapped happened months ago, and I feel like it’s a little too late to send
flowers and a thank-you card.
Though I don’t know where I’d send them
anyway, since Jonas, Rex, and Levi are currently traveling the country in a
ridiculous RV, having, like, an extended grand honeymoon type of thing,
minus the marriage. Let’s be real though, they would totally be married
right now if they could be.
I breathe in again as I feel the bed dip behind me. Strong arms slip
between the sheets and my body, wrapping around me like a python.
A
warm chest presses against my back as soft lips tenderly graze the back of
my neck. I still haven’t opened my eyes, but I can’t stop myself from biting
my bottom lip to contain a smile. A giddy, I’m so happy smile. I haven’t
had many of those in my life. Well, not before.
Before Luca.
You see, this right here is the kind of moment little Kit always
dreamed about. When he was stuck in the dressing room in the back of the
club his mother worked at, wearing his mother’s silky robe between sets
while staring longingly at her makeup haphazardly sprawled out on her
little station.
Sometimes he’d stare at himself too, those big bright bulbs
around the mirror lighting up his dirty, too-skinny face, imaging himself
putting on that makeup for his wedding day. That would be the day he
married a prince, because, let’s face it, little Kit was a huge dreamer with
high hopes, despite the hard, poor situation he lived in.
But that Kit is gone. His dreams had been stomped out long ago, and
now he realizes that life doesn’t have princes. At least not the kind he had
once imagined. Romance isn’t for him, and people rarely stayed after they
got what they wanted from you.
Luca stayed. He’s still here.
