Nate
The music blares over the radio in the pastel-colored van I drive, causing
heads to turn when they notice my tattooed arm hanging out the window. I
smile when I see shock on people’s faces at spotting me in the driver’s seat
rather than the blonde sugary personality they assume should be driving the
flowered vehicle.

The contract sitting on the seat next to me flutters with the wind. I
wouldn’t mind if the papers took off into the breeze, flying out onto the
highway and relieving me of the discussion we’ll soon be having.
Do I even want to give it to her? After years apart it would seem to be a
no-brainer, but nothing is ever simple when it comes to Amelia. It’s been
almost three years since I last set eyes on her, but I imagine my body will
react the same way it always did.

Heart pounding, skin buzzing, unable to stop smiling—just being in her
vicinity sets my skin on fire.

If that hasn’t changed, I’ll have my answer. Although even if I know
what I want, there is no saying that Amelia will take me back.
The ringing phone interrupts my thoughts. I know it’s Grant even before I
pick it up. I’d programmed the phone to play “Friends in Low Places”
whenever he calls. He doesn’t find it funny, and for some reason that makes
me laugh even harder whenever I hear it. I take one hand off the wheel and
slide the bar to accept the call. “Hi, Grant.”

“How’s the ride going?”
I bounce my left foot against the floorboard and keep my eyes on the
road. “Almost to New York.”

“Damn, you made good time.”
“Just want to get this over with,” I reply brusquely.
“Right. Well, the label needs the forms signed ASAP. When are you
going to see her?”
Her. Such a loaded word. “Soon.”

“Does she know you’re coming?”
His questions tire me. I don’t want to discuss her with him. “Listen, I
gotta go. Cop up ahead. Don’t have a hands-free device in this thing.”
Grant laughs. “Yeah, I can’t imagine that the seventies regularly fixed
their Volkswagens with cellphone devices.”

I hang up rather than responding. I don’t want to shoot the breeze with
him. To be honest, if I have to go back to Nashville, I don’t know how I’m
going to record with him. But what choice do I have? If Amelia doesn’t
want me, that’s the only life I have left.
