Show me a pure bride, and I’ll show you a damn liar.
No one waited until marriage to have sex anymore, so the white dress
was moot.
Weddings were a waste of money, and I didn’t understand why anyone
would want one.

The saleswoman came over, pulling me out of my thoughts. “Would you
like a glass of champagne while you wait?”
I started to say, “No thank you,” but before I could finish, Valerie
clapped her hands. She was the wild half of my two platonic soulmates, so
her excitement usually meant danger was afoot.

I was the driver for today’s carpool of insanity, and we were at the third
dress shop on the itinerary. It was feeling more like a pub crawl than
wedding dress shopping.

“Sorry, Blake’s being a total grouch today. She’s not usually like this.”
She gave me a look that said “What’s with you?” before answering the
saleswoman’s question. “I’ll take one for me and one for the bride, please.”
The woman nodded her head, smiling from ear to ear. “I’ll get right on
that,” she said and disappeared down the hall.

I picked up a dress catalog lying on the table between our fancy white
chairs and flipped through it. “I just don’t get it. Why would anyone want to
pay $300 a person to eat overcooked chicken while listening to bad music
being played from tinny speakers?”

Val shifted in her chair, twisting to face me. She was clearly over my
bad attitude. “Receptions don’t have to cost that much, you know. You’re
just biased because you run an overpriced wedding venue.”
I rolled my eyes. “It’s not just a wedding venue. It’s a resort.”
“Yeah, where people visit so they can get married.” She paused and did
that thing where she squinted her eyes, allowing her to read my thoughts.

“What’s this really about?”
The saleswoman came back, handing one glass to Val and setting
another on the table. “I just snuck a peek at Lina—”
I interrupted her. “It’s pronounced Lynn-a, not Lean-a.” And the girl’s
face went totally red.

Fuck. I really was being an asshole today. “Sorry. That was rude of me.
I shouldn’t have cut you off like that.”

She smiled. “No, I’m just embarrassed because I’ve been calling her the
wrong name since you all walked in.” It was so like Lina not to correct
someone for saying her name incorrectly. Her full first name was
Magdalina, but only her closest friends knew that.

Her future husband and
his friends called her Maggie because of some inside joke or whatever, but
other than that, she was just our Lina. The saleswoman turned around,
looking toward the hallway my other platonic soulmate had disappeared
down ten minutes before. “Anyway, Lina looks really beautiful right now.”
