ROSIE
“Where the fuck is that bloody demon?”
Gavin’s words pierced the sleepy fog I’d been floating in.
Ben’s blood still lingered on my tongue, his firm body warming me as he
dozed with me in his arms. The single moment of happiness I’d found in this
tempest of chaos dashed with my husband’s harsh question.
I sat up, rousing Ben as I spoke. “What? He’s chained up and secured. As
he should be.” I said the words on pure instinct; it wasn’t like I actually
knew. I hadn’t been allowed back in the room with him after the failed
exorcism. My other mates deemed it too unsafe. I wasn’t one to blindly take
orders from a bunch of overprotective alpha males—just ask Noah—but I
didn’t want to rock the boat any more than necessary after what we’d all been
through.
Pan and I would have our reckoning. Just as soon as Remi got back.
Gavin’s posture was rigid—shoulders tight, jaw clenched, brow furrowed
so deep I worried it would stick that way. This wasn’t the man I’d grown
accustomed to. The one who observed everything with feline grace, an air of
disinterest shrouding him at all times. “He was. He . . . broke free.”
“How?” The lone word was snarled, Ben’s wolf responding to the
perceived threat.
“I assume he used brute strength, Bentley. Unless he gnawed through the
chains with his teeth. I wasn’t there, or I’d have stopped him.”
Gavin’s deadpan delivery dripped with disdain. My surly wolf and
broody vampire were hardly friends, begrudging allies more like, but this was
the first time in a long time it felt like they were back at square one with each
other.
“S-so there’s a p-pissed off d-demon running around and w-we c-can’t
find h-him? Just g-great.”
“I’m sure he won’t get far. A hulking purple brute is sure to garner some
attention,” I offered, not feeling particularly comforted by the thought of Pan
strolling down Main Street.
Gavin turned his gaze on me. “Perhaps, before the hellmouth opened and
demons began to run rampant through the town,” he said dryly.
“Good point,” I said, chewing on my bottom lip. Dread sat heavy in my
belly as I pondered what sort of damage Pan could do with his demonic form
unleashed.
“I n-need to t-tell Remi. F-for all we kn-know, he c-could be Pan’s ttarget.” Ben stood but swayed as soon as he was upright, one hand shooting
out to brace himself on the headboard. “F-fuck, sugar. You t-took more than
usual.”
I didn’t. In fact, I’d fed lightly this time because I was worried about
overtaxing him. Snagging his phone out of the pocket of his discarded jeans,
Ben sat down on the mattress and grunted, thumb and index finger rubbing at
his temples.
“Are you all right?” I asked, running my palm across his broad shoulders
in soothing circles.
“H-headache.”
