Whispers on the wind call my name, dreams that haunt
my sunrise.
My soul screams for peace, for the darkness to end and
then there be light!
-Viraj
Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP VJ Bellani scrolled through his
cellphone scanning through the various messages and alerts that beeped
continually. The late afternoon sun filtered through the blinds behind the
receptionist’s desk in front of him. It was an hour since he had been waiting
outside his boss, the Deputy Commissioner of Police’s, office and he’d been
informed a while back that the DCP was in a meeting.
VJ pressed down the back of his neck and hoped he didn’t look as
haggard as he felt. He’d been working for forty-eight hours straight and the
lack of sleep was taking a toll on him now. The bust his team had planned
had succeeded and in the end, that was what mattered.
After that successful op, all he’d planned to do this evening was
head home and sleep for the next whole day if possible. That was until he had
been summoned to the DCP’s office. And one could never refuse a call from
a senior officer, no matter the situation.
“Sir, you can go in now,” the receptionist announced.
Finally! Breathing a sigh of relief, VJ nodded at the lady as he
stood up. He buttoned the top button of his dark jacket and adjusted the
collar of his white shirt before heading towards the shut door of his boss’s
office.
Giving a soft knock, he entered inside the plush interiors and
saluted the senior officer seated behind the massive mahogany desk. The
DCP, a man in his mid-forties, greeted him with a warm smile.
A quick glance ahead and VJ noted another man seated in front of
the DCP, his back to him, talking into his cellphone, his other hand tucked
inside his pocket.
“Come in and take a seat young man,” DCP Sinha of the Mumbai
Police said, pointing at the vacant chair in front of him.
VJ strode forward and unbuttoned his jacket before seating
himself on the offered chair. He twisted his head to see the other occupant
beside him and was stunned. However, he displayed none of the shock he
felt. Instead, VJ calmly watched the politician seated beside him, speaking
into his phone. A second later, the man disconnected the call and turned to
VJ.
“So, is he the one?” the politician queried the DCP, while his gaze
remained arrested on VJ as he assessed him from top to toe.
What was going on? Why was Sumit Thakur here? VJ’s curiosity
burned and his hand clenched into a fist on his lap, but there was no way he
could voice the questions swirling in his head. He would know soon enough
anyways. He only had to be patient and he had patience in spades. VJ kept his
focus fixed on the DCP instead.
