I was working in the bar on a Thursday night and really itching for a
good fight. It had been months since the last time I’d tussled with some
hardcore undead, not to mention my ex-boyfriend-slash-warlock-slashwerewolf. It had been even longer than that since I’d had to kick some
demon ass, and dems were always looking for trouble in my town. Hell, it
had been weeks since there had even been a bar fight. Considering that
Hell’s Chapel catered to werewolves, demons, ogres, trolls, and all other
sorts of nasty customers, we usually had a good brawl at least once or twice
a week. But for some reason everyone had been so chill lately that I hadn’t
had to crack a single skull. What’s up with that?
I suppose I should have been grateful. After all, no fights meant no broken
furniture for me to replace. But on the other hand, I was bored.
The door opened and I looked up, expecting to see a customer. At least if I
had a steady stream of alcoholic tweens in the bar, I’d make money while I
was bored out of my mind. But it was just Jezze, and while I always
enjoyed the company of my BFF, I had really been hoping for a paying
customer. It had been a slow week, and my son’s private school tuition was
coming due soon.
Jezze walked over to the bar with a bit of a sashay to her hips. I arched an
eyebrow, watching her. She didn’t usually strut her stuff like that in the bar.
Some of the trolls could get handsy when they thought an attractive girl like
Jezze was putting herself out there. And considering she had a boyfriend—a
werewolf, and a member of my father’s local wolf pack—she didn’t tend to
enjoy the unwanted attention.
Between the sway of her hips and the grin on her lips, I could tell she was
in a good mood. I held my breath, hoping it was what I thought it was. I’d
been waiting on news for weeks, and she looked like she had something
juicy to spill.
Jezze leaned her elbows on the bar and propped her chin in her hands,
smiling at me. I stared her down, waiting for her to say something. The little
bitch was going to make me ask, though.
I held back a growl, well, mostly, and asked, “So did you get it or not?”
She gave me the most innocent look in the world, as if she wasn’t
enjoying dragging this out. “Oh, by ‘it,’ do you mean the last known preRoman Seer Stone? Well, if that’s what you mean…”
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a stone the size of her fist. It
looked delicate. Almost like porcelain.
“This?” she asked, holding it up. “You know how much this cost. Right?”
I nodded. The reason I was behind on Bryony’s tuition was because it had
cost me most of my savings to get the seer stone. And when I say “most of
my savings,”
