Four Months Ago…
Dragging a body through the woods was always my least favorite way to
dispose of them. I preferred fire after it was all said and done, but being
this close to the city, I was sure someone would see the smoke and call the
fire department, which was the last thing I needed.

I could have chopped him up into a bunch of little pieces and scattered
him around the city like bird feed, but that was too messy, and I didn’t want
to put anymore time into this piece of shit.
I grunted as I shoved the deadweight of him into the hole I’d dug earlier. I
doubted anyone would find him this far out in the woods. This spot was far
off from any walking trails, and I had dug deep enough that no one would
smell him as he rotted away.

I liked to think I was a reasonable man, only killing those who deserved
it. My abusive father was the inspiration for this little hobby of mine. Turns
out, there were plenty more like him just roaming the streets. Being a bailiff
made it significantly easier to find the rapists, child abusers, the guys that
always seemed to do the worst things and walk away scot-free without a
care in the world. Sometimes the justice system would work, sometimes it
didn’t—that was when I would come in.

I shoveled dirt one heaping scoop at a time to cover the hole while I
listened to music in my headphones. Classic rock, with an extensive drum
solo. Perfect digging music.

The sun had set, and my shirt clung to my body, soaked in sweat. I flung
the shovel aside, chest heaving. I’d return to it in the morning. I was too
tired to haul anything else around with me for today. I required a hot shower
for my aching muscles, a meal for my starving gut, and rest to recoup from
the day. Executing a perfect killing and burial takes a lot out of a man.

I took off my skull mask and cranked my tunes and started a fast-paced
jog to the nearest trail, following it back to the main path of the large park
of the city that all the trails connected to. It was late now, and I wasn’t
expecting anyone to be out now that the sun was almost completely gone.
But as I rounded the corner, a woman caught my attention. I stopped dead
in my tracks, for lack of a better term.

She was wandering like a lost puppy, looking ahead. She didn’t even
seem to notice me as she passed. Which wasn’t good considering I was
wearing an all black sweatsuit looking as shady as ever coming out of the
woods covered in sweat and dirt. Was she not worried about her safety?
Then again, it was already dark, maybe she didn’t notice my disheveled
appearance.
