January 1885

Lethia blew air into her freezing hands, creating clouds of white mist and
fogging up her spectacles. With holes in her worn-out gloves, the temporary
warmth from her breath could only ease the sting on her fingertips for so
long. She huddled against the wall, staying away from the falling snow as
best as she could.

Tugging her hands beneath her armpits, she stared at the basket full of
apples next to her feet as the fog cleared from the lenses. Maybe she could
afford a new pair of gloves after she sold the apples.
No, she thought as she shook her head.

She needed to save the money. Eirene needed the money for school. And
Mum needed a doctor. Compared to their needs, Lethia’s gloves were but a
mere selfish wish.

Lethia pulled her hood lower. Though the sky was thick with gray clouds,
the bright snow still stung her eyes. She glanced at the square and sighed.
Covered in snow, the square was not as lively as she had expected. She had
hoped the nobles would come out and stroll about on this New Year’s Day,
but the snow had ruined it.

She must think of other ways to sell the apples. Lethia had tried selling to
the bakeries but got shunned. Mum’s condition had worsened. And Eirene
would turn fifteen soon; Lethia mustn’t delay her younger sister’s education
any longer.

She huffed and puffed in her freezing hands again and took out a
handkerchief to wipe her red, watery nose.
Some muffled footsteps and merry chatter interrupted her gloomy
thoughts; a couple approached in her direction. Lethia quickly shoved the
handkerchief back into her pocket and stepped forward.
“Would you like some apples, sir? Ma’am?” she said, a red apple in her
hand. “Delicious apples. Crisp and sweet like honey—”
“Such filthy hands.” The woman gasped and avoided her.

“Away with you!” The man waved his walking stick at Lethia, beating the
apple out of her hand. “Come now, darling. Mustn’t let the foul creature taint
our New Year.”

New Year. There was nothing new about a new year. Nothing had been
new to her at all. Every day, every year, was the same old worries.
Lethia slowly picked up the apple. Fortunately, there was no dent in the
fruit. The snow must have saved it.
Another gentleman walked by.
