Beware of the fox in the henhouse.
What the fuck? I turn it over, and there’s more.
They are coming for you and Gio next.
The throbbing sound of the club music penetrates the fog of confusion the
note causes. On one hand, it’s vague as shit and almost juvenile. On the
other, can I really afford to ignore it? I mean we’re not stupid, we know there
are people constantly gunning for us, but why give us this warning now?
Balling the piece of paper in my hand, I scan the bar for a clue as to who left
it. I know it’s probably futile and they are long gone, but I can’t help myself.
Nothing stands out in the crowd of beautiful, half naked, intoxicated
people. No one is paying any particular attention to me or seems to be
suspicious. Blowing out a sigh of frustration, I tuck the piece of paper into
the top of my dress to show Gio when I get back to the VIP area. I’ll also
need to look at the security footage and see if anyone is recognizable in it.
Now, I just have to make myself return.
I’m half tempted to call it a night
and head home. To be honest, I’m exhausted. The last six months since Dad’s
death have been nonstop. I finished high school, plus we managed to keep all
the vultures who came after Dad’s empire at bay, assuming we were a couple
of teenagers who didn’t know what we were doing. Suffice it to say, the
population of mafia families on the West Coast has dwindled to just us and a
handful of others, most notably the Maricuso family, the one Penelope
wanted to marry me off to. The damn step-witch would do anything to get rid
of me.
I’ve recently discovered this is the family that Stacey’s family belongs to.
I didn’t put two and two together until it was literally shoved in my face.
While we have an uneasy truce with them, Gio says Dad couldn’t stand
Mario, the head of the family. There’s something somewhat sinister and
dishonest about him, which is saying a lot considering our line of work, and
he has no children, which makes the line of succession unclear.
It’s one of the
things that I need to investigate while Gio is playing college student. We
want to make sure that if we have to take him out, we’re not, in fact,
promoting Stacey to the front of the line. Wouldn’t that be something? Not
that we don’t have plans for her either, but I do like watching her sweat, and
that’s the real reason I need to return to the VIP section.
