LIAM
His father. The prince. His father. His father.
Gunnar’s words echoed again and again in my head, whirling like a
deflating balloon spinning out of control. My father was responsible for the
attacks on Kelsey? As much as I didn’t want to believe this piece-of-shit
hunter scum, part of me questioned the validity of his claim.
Rowan Castle, my father, was capable of so much worse that it wasn’t
hard to imagine him working with the enemy to gain something he desired.
My fucking mate.

Pieces of my life clicked into place or at least began to fit together.
Loosely. It didn’t mean they were true, but it did make me question aspects
of my past. Like the possibility the treaty had nothing to do with what was
best for me or the pack but with how it could benefit Rowan Castle. How
Kelsey could enhance his power.
I glared at Gunnar, uncertainty warring with reason. Despite what my
father was capable of, he was still my father. The pack alpha. The regional
prince.

It came down to trusting my father or a hunter.
Right now, neither seemed fit to be trustworthy. Not with Kelsey’s life.
The girl in question’s body jerked when my father’s name rasped from
Gunnar’s lips. She yanked the pointed nail embedded into the side of his
neck, taking a step backward. His blood flowed like a stream from the
puncture wound, cascading down his throat, and the air became tainted with
the metallic tang of his blood.

Gunnar better freaking hope he got the healing abilities of wolves;
otherwise, Kelsey just issued his death. She’d pierced a vital vein.
I’d be rather pleased if he didn’t. He deserved nothing less than death.
Kelsey looked over at me, confusion and bewilderment taking up the
lines on her face. “Liam?”
With my wolf eyes, I glanced at her, feeling as conflicted as she did.
She could sense the struggle happening inside me.

“We can’t trust him,” I sent through our bond.
Conflict swam in her eyes, but she nodded, her magic still shackling
Gunnar to the tree. The bonds around his neck loosened, and the hunter
drew in a gurgling gasp of air. A hand flew to his neck, pressing into the
hole left behind by Kelsey’s claw.

“You lie,” she spat, her violet eyes blazing.
The hunter’s gaze shifted from my mate to me. He swallowed,
struggling to speak.

I bared my canines, giving him an incentive to start fucking talking. I
didn’t give a shit if he bled out. Time was essential. My cousin was still tied
up in the woods, and I wasn’t certain how long Kelsey’s powers could
endure. The last thing I needed was this bastard to die before I got answers.
His blood-soaked hand dropped to his side, his labored breathing
evening out.

Looked like someone could heal, and he wouldn’t die after all. Pity.
I couldn’t decide if letting him live was a good or terrible idea. The
verdict remained in question.
“Do I?” Gunnar rasped, finally responding to Kelsey’s statement calling
him a liar.

She kept her chin high as she glared at him. “You’d say anything to save
yourself. I don’t even know why I’m listening to you. You’ve already
proven to be deceitful.”
