The blinding sunlight had my eyes squinting and pushing my aviators
firmly back in place. The sun felt warm on my skin as I exited my truck in
the parking lot of the local home improvement store. It was going to be a
hot one today. That’s one reason why I was out early as fuck to get the rest
of the supplies I’d need to finish my new backyard deck today. That was
today’s goal. I’d been working on this project non-stop for the last two
weeks. If I wasn’t working, then I was outside building this deck. Never in
my life did I think I’d be visiting a hardware store this much. Now over the
past two weeks, I’d visited one more than I had my entire life.
That’s what happens when life takes a giant shit on you. Your
perspective changes. Your goals shift and priorities change. That’s exactly
what happened to me six months ago when I came home from corporate
America job, completely unsuspecting and found my then fiancé screwing
my now ex-best friend. I took one look at what was going on, turned
around, walked out and never looked back. I had known my best friend,
Kyle since first grade and I had been with my fiancé for over a decade but
that didn’t mean a thing to either one of them. Clearly. I never even went
back to the house that I partially owned. I had my things boxed and moved
by a company and quit my job. I used a lawyer who was a friend of mine
that I knew from college to sort out the legal shit on the house. Moved over
a thousand miles away and I still have no regrets.
I knew if I looked at either one of them again, I would say or do
something that I couldn’t take back. I’ve never laid a hand on a woman
before but my ex, yeah she deserved to get slapped for not only cheating but
to go so low as to do it with my best friend. In the days that were fresh after
the incident I hoped that she got into a girl fight and some lady would give
a good slap.
Don’t get me started on my best friend Kyle. We’ve been
through everything together from childhood, puberty and even boot camp.
Clearly, his loyalties changed over time. That day I wanted to kill him but
as time has gone on the anger has slipped away and only the hurt still
lingers.
