Kalliope
Kalliope caressed another flute of champagne from a passing waiter, her
nose in the glass as she slipped through the crowd. She had never spoken to
so many people with an exuberant amount of money who were ready to
throw it at her feet. As she swirled the light golden liquid, she fixed her
gaze on Candace’s sun-kissed locks and exhaled heavily.
Candace Kensington, her recent bride and client, had been thrilled with
how her wedding turned out. She had praised Vows & Veils and even
invited Kalliope to the hottest New Year’s Eve party to help her expand her
network. Candace had embraced her completely, introducing her to the elite
group she associated with, and was now instrumental in growing Kalliope’s
clientele.
Kalliope quickly turned her head away from a group of ladies she had
yet to talk to—and had no desire to. So many had requested Kalliope’s
contact information, and she knew that once her vacation was over and she
returned to work, she would be fully booked.
Kalliope had never expected to reach the top of skyscrapers, let alone
find herself in the company of people like them. But here she was, and she
knew that tonight’s energy would carry her into the new year. She was
capable of achieving anything she set her mind to, including realizing her
dreams. Her biggest enemy was her own brain, and she wouldn’t let it
hinder her progress.
Plucking a canapé off one of the silver trays, she turned on her heels and
made her way toward the edge of the room. She devoured it quickly, barely
savoring the meaty flavor, and washed it down with champagne before
leaning against the window. Staring out into the city, Kalliope absorbed it
all—the twinkling urban lights, the bustling streets, and the vibrant energy
pulsating throughout the room.
She scanned the skyline, taking a sip of her champagne, and a smile
crept onto her face. Kalliope had promised herself she would one day live
in a high-rise apartment, and she was now so close to making that dream a
reality.
“Refill?”
Her head whipped around at the smooth voice, and her lips parted. He
had a chiseled face, sharp and angular, as if crafted by the hands of
Michelangelo himself and painted to resemble a god. He extended a glass of
champagne.
His touch brushed lightly over her hand, sending goosebumps skittering
across her skin, replacing warmth with a chill. She watched intently as he
placed her empty glass on a table a few feet away and returned with a glass
of cognac in his hand. “You don’t seem very talkative,” he remarked.
Heat rushed to Kalliope’s cheeks, and her left hand fidgeted with the
end of her black mini dress. “Oh, uh… Hey,” she stammered, flustered. “I
mean, hey.”
