FOUR YEARS LATER
Maevis Barlowe smiles softly at me. With her long braid tied loosely
over her shoulder and brown doe eyes, she reminds me of a darkhaired Tinker Bell, both in her youthful appearance and her petite frame.
The rocking chair she sits in is strategically placed to offer the best view of
the mountains surrounding us. And what a wonderful view it is. Tall, snowy
peaks glow in the distance, a mantle of evergreens embracing the mountains
and clear, blue skies as far as the eye can see.
“I know a three-month contract isn’t ideal for long-term rentals,” I tell her,
“but I appreciate you giving me a tour of your lovely home, anyway.”
Returning her smile, I’m deciding how much to disclose.
After spending no more than three months in each of the places I fancied on
stopping, now that I’m on the verge of hitting my thirties, I long for a home.
A place of my own where I can exist, and breathe, and read, and not be
constantly on the move.
I’d done nothing wrong, yet I was the one fleeing the only home I’ve ever
known four years ago. I’m the one running away at the first sight of a tiny
root trying to anchor itself into the ground.
I take a deep breath, and the pit in my stomach grows smaller. It shrinks
with every step I take toward healing and every stitch I so painfully apply to
my still-mending heart.
I swore to myself if a man ever cheated on me, like Daddy Dearest had on
my mom, I wouldn’t blame myself or my actions. I wouldn’t overthink my
behavior in a fruitless quest to understand if something I said, did, or maybe
my looks, pushed a man who swore up and down how much he loved me,
into the arms and between the legs of another woman.
Logically, I know that even if he was unhappy with me, he could’ve chosen
to discuss his unhappiness, so we’d try to fix the issues. He could’ve chosen
to break up with me, instead of disrespecting me by fucking another woman
on my favorite sheets.
Emotionally, I know nothing. The darkness inside me keeps repeating how
unlovable I am. How unworthy of attention and affection I am. I shut down
the negative voice in my head with a sigh and force my attention back to
Maevis.
“I’m willing to pay six months’ worth of rent, if it helps you. My house is
not ready yet, although I was promised it would be by the end of May. Now,
I’m told the soonest move-in date is the middle of August because of the
abnormal rain in April. It was impossible for the crew to get the supplies to
the construction site,” I explain.
I’m crossing my fingers and toes my offer appeals to her. I need to rent her
family home for the following summer months.
