Pastor Freeman shook Claire Thompson’s hand, then held it between
both of his. “I’ll be praying for you. Call me or Susan if you need
anything.”
His wife, Susan, standing beside him, nodded. “Even if you just want to
talk.”
Claire nodded. “Thank you. I appreciate that.”
She stood in the foyer as the pastor and his wife left, closing the door
behind them. They’d been the last guests at her husband’s memorial, which
seemed fitting, since Pastor Freeman had done the ceremony.
Claire’s mother, Margo, and her half-sister, Julia, who went by Jules,
remained in the living room. Jules’s two sons hadn’t come, but they didn’t
live close, and Claire hadn’t expected them to.
What she did expect was for Bryan to come down the stairs, but that was
never going to happen again, was it? A fresh wave of grief swept through her.
She closed her eyes and leaned against the door until it passed.
A few deep breaths, a few thoughts about happier memories, and the
unbearableness of the moment passed.
The memorial service had been well attended, but that was no surprise.
Bryan had been well-liked by so many people, even if most of them only
knew him peripherally. He’d been a tremendously ambitious man and a
wonderful provider, attributes that she’d often reminded herself didn’t come
without a cost. One of those costs was all the time he’d spent away from her
and Kat. That was the unfortunate but necessary downside when someone
worked as much as Bryan did.
She understood him traveling for his business, she really did. She never
nagged him about it, either. Bryan had been a financial advisor and investor
with three offices spread across the panhandle and central Florida. He dealt
with enormous sums of money for the very wealthy, and those kinds of
clients expected to see the person handling their investments face to face.
When they set up a meeting with Bryan, he had to be there. A video call
might suffice in some cases, but not usually. Not when millions were at stake.
A video call didn’t instill confidence. He’d said it so often, she knew it to be
true.
She also knew that he made as much money as he did because he worked
so hard and made sure all of his clients got the personal touch. Bryan had
been big on the personal touch. He claimed it was what set him apart from
most other financial advisors. He sent a personally signed card with a note for
every client’s birthday, which wasn’t so unusual, but he was always willing
to meet with new clients or visit with old ones whenever they wanted him to,
even if it meant flying to wherever they were.
